Facebook unveils upgraded wireless Oculus headset in VR push

Facebook-owned Oculus VR has announced a planned next-generation all-in-one virtual reality (VR) headset, the Oculus Quest, to launch early next year and priced at $399.

You can experience YouTube VR on your Samsung Gear, powered by Oculus, everyone with a VR headset will be now able to experience it.

The wireless Oculus Quest offers six degrees of freedom and Touch controllers without the need of an accompanying PC, phone, or any external sensors.

Interestingly, an upcoming Star Wars experience from ILMxLAB will also be available on Oculus Quest with its first episode, Vader Immortal: A Star Wars VR Series debuting on Oculus Quest for launch.

Compared to the Oculus Go's 1280 x 1440 per eye, the Oculus Quest also offers a much higher resolution of 1600x1440 resolution per eye. And for those that are anxious they could potentially bump into their furniture while playing, the Oculus Quest will also support Guardian, which will allow users to set up virtual barriers.

Oculus said the Quest (64GB) will launch later this year for $399 in the U.S., with over 50 titles ready at launch. The device is something of a cross between the more expensive and specialized Oculus Rift headsets, and its Oculus Go headset.

The Oculus Quest will be released next Spring and retail for $399.

As for other components, the Quest makes use of four built-in, wide-angle sensors that allow for 6DOF movement without the need for external sensors. Its motion controllers are similar to (but not identical) to those used for Oculus Touch. This figure is well under what many VR fans expected the standalone HMD to cost, particularly in knowing that the headset is aiming for Rift-quality experiences. Currently, preorders on Oculus Quest haven't begun, so we don't even have a ballpark figure to go by beyond Oculus' announcement. The Oculus VR platform requires expertise that most enterprises don't have at the ready, and businesses are tasked with finding enough use cases to warrant investment.
