Scientists behind cancer immunotherapies win Nobel Prize in medicine

Tasuku Honjo, distinguished professor at Kyoto University, has won the 2018 Nobel Prize in physiology and medicine for his discovery of a protein that helped lead to immunotherapeutic methods of cancer treatment, the Karolinska Institute in Sweden announced on October 1. "The discovery made by the two Medicine Laureates takes advantage of the immune system's ability to attack cancer cells by releasing the brakes on immune cells".

Kanazawa University's Masamichi Muramatsu, who worked in Honjo's lab for 12 years, was similarly pleased to hear the news.

"The discovery of Jim Allison led to the first drug that routinely caused patients with a metastatic disease - melanoma - - to go into complete remission", he said.

"I'm honored and humbled to receive this prestigious recognition", Allison said in a statement.

Unlike more traditional forms of cancer treatment that directly target cancer cells, Allison and Honjo figured out how to help the patient's own immune system tackle the cancer more quickly.

The winners of this year's physics prize will be announced on Tuesday, followed by the chemistry prize on Wednesday.

"While most researchers investigating cancer immunology were advocating vaccines to turn "on" T cells to drive antitumor immune responses, Dr. Allison was proposing the opposite-to block the "off" signal, according to the ASCO Post, a newspaper that covers cancer research".

"I want to continue my research, so that this immune therapy will save more cancer patients than ever", he told reporters at the University of Kyoto where he is based.

"We know that some patients have a very low chance of responding. those with little evidence that these pathways are actively restricting the immune system, or those with cancers that are less heavily mutated", he said.

The methods are responsible for the development of cancer immunotherapy, which is included with surgery, radiation and chemotherapy as approaches to fighting cancer.

The US Food and Drug Administration has already approved a number of checkpoint treatments, including some using the PD-1.

Dr. James P. Allison, University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, poses for a photo in NY in 2015. Allison also is deputy director of the David H Koch Center for Applied Research of Genitourinary Cancers at MD Anderson and holds the Vivian L. Smith Distinguished Chair in Immunology.

"When Dana showed me the results, I was really surprised", Allison said.

"When we showed (Professor Ralph) Reisfeld a paper we wrote, he actually said, 'I don't want my name on it".

"Cancer kills millions of people every year and is one of humanity's greatest health challenges", the Nobel committee said on Twitter.

Thanks to Allison's doggedness, anti-CTLA-4 therapy is now an accepted therapy for cancer and it opened the floodgates for a slew of new immunotherapies, Krummel said.

Checkpoint inhibitors allow the body's natural defenses to throw their full weight against cancer cells. Allison's initial findings can be credited for prompting researchers, including Allison himself, to carry out the studies that have demonstrated the potent anti-cancer effects of PD-1 antibodies. Carter announced in 2016 that he no longer needed treatment.
