Yale classmate accuses Kavanaugh of ‘blatant mischaracterization’ of his college drinking

Ford claims Kavanaugh sexually and physically assaulted her while they were at a party during their high school years, and has said Judge was also in the room.

His remarks came amid questions about whether Republicans want to limit the scope of the FBI's investigation into allegations of sexual assault that have been level against Kavanaugh.

"I want them to interview whoever they deem appropriate, at their discretion", the president tweeted late Saturday. "It has been from the beginning, and we're letting the Senate continue to dictate what the terms look like", Ms Sanders said.

"The FBI should do what they have to do to get to the answer", Trump said.

Spokeswoman Sarah Sanders insisted that the White House was staying "out of the way", but also said the inquiry should not be allowed to become a "total fishing expedition" by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Last week, a triumvirate of Republican senators - Jeff Flake of Arizona, Susan Collins of ME and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska - vowed to withhold support for the nominee unless the White House allowed a supplemental background check into claims of sexual assault against Kavanaugh from California university professor Christine Blasey Ford.

Judge's interview started but "has not been completed", his attorney said in a statement quoted by Fox News.

US President Donald Trump hit back Sunday at suggestions his administration is trying to "micromanage" the FBI investigation of controversial Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, accusing opposition Democrats of being interested only in obstruction. The declaration does not explicitly allege Kavanaugh or Judge were involved in the alleged assault. Kavanaugh has denied her allegation, as well as sexual misconduct accusations by two other women.

The FBI moved quickly to question a number of people, including several of Kavanaugh's friends from high school, on Monday. She declined to elaborate.

Trump reiterated that this investigation marks the seventh one conducted by the FBI into Kavanaugh's background.

The FBI has also interviewed Leland Keyser, who Ford said attended the same party.

" 'She has agreed to cooperate with their investigation, ' Ramirez attorney John Clune said in a statement". "They obviously are afraid of what my client might say, which is why they are avoiding her".

Ms Mitchell argued that there were inconsistencies in accuser Christine Blasey Ford's narrative and said no one has corroborated Ms Ford's account.

Chad Ludington, a former Yale classmate of Brett Kavanaugh, said the judge had played down "the degree and frequency" of his drinking and that Kavanaugh had often become "belligerent and aggressive" while intoxicated.

The FBI has already contacted four people on its list, the Times reported. Kavanaugh has denied all the allegations.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., doubled down Tuesday on his vow to hold a vote by the end of the week on the Supreme Court nomination of Judge Brett Kavanaugh, saying he was the victim of open "floodgates of mud and muck". The Judiciary Committee had a closed hearing to review the previous background checks into Kavanaugh after the initial public hearings for him last month.

Nine of 10 Democrats on the Judiciary Committee wrote on Monday to FBI Director Christopher Wray and White House Counsel Don McGahn, listing 24 people they said should be interviewed by the FBI and urging that the investigation assess all three allegations of sexual misconduct.

The new inquiry has delayed a final vote on Judge Kavanaugh, who if confirmed is likely to tip America's highest court in favour of conservatives. Judge "categorically" denies the allegations.

The Senate Judiciary Committee has said that the investigation would be "limited to current credible allegations" - raising questions over exactly what would be investigated given that Kavanaugh faces multiple allegations.
