Tropical storm likely to form, roll toward US Gulf coast

Some strengthening is forecast during the next several days, with the depression expected to become a tropical storm later Sunday. Winds will likely run from 20-35 miles per hour. With a movement of 3 mph, it's nearly loitering 100 miles east northeast of Chetumal, Mexico, and 240 miles south southwest of Cuba's western tip.

Meteorologists say maximum sustained winds are near 30 miles per hour with stronger gusts. The depression is expected to turn north later on Sunday and continue in that direction through Wednesday. Improving conditions expected later Friday and into Saturday.

A tropical storm was forming in the Caribbean Sea on Saturday and could reach the Carolinas by Thursday, the National Hurricane Center in Miami said in a 5 p.m. update.

The low pressure center over Oklahoma that helped to provide scattered showers on Saturday, will travel north along the frontal boundary into IL on Sunday.

The area in red indicates where this system is likely to develop. Once the storm and cold front pass, it now looks like we'll see some actual cooler air with highs next weekend expected to stay in the 60s.
