Haiti quake kills at least 11, injures others

An natural disaster hit northern Haiti late on Saturday, killing at least 14 people and sparking a scramble by rescue agencies to help residents of the worst-hit towns in the impoverished Caribbean country.

A magnitude 5.9 quake struck near Haiti on Saturday night, according to the US Geological Survey.

The quake and its aftershocks set off panic in some neighborhoods, but President Jovenel Moïse and other leaders called for calm.

Port-de-Paix, Gros-Morne, the town of Chansolme and the northern island of Tortuga were among the areas worst hit, Haiti's civil protection agency said in a statement.

Tens of thousands of people are still believed to be displaced as a result.

The Nord-Ouest department is the poorest part of impoverished Haiti, with many isolated areas due to the dire state of the roads.

The quake struck at 8:10 pm (0010 GMT Sunday) at a shallow depth of 11.7 kilometers. After shocks were reported in the Caribbean, including the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.

On January 12, 2010, Haiti suffered a devastating magnitude-7 quake which killed more than 300,000 people and destroyed much of the capital Port-au-Prince. Others tilted at precarious angles.

Many wondered how they were going to rebuild from Saturday night's quake and a strong 5.2 magnitude aftershock on Sunday that had residents in the coastal city of Port-de-Paix and elsewhere anxious about returning to their cracked cinderblock homes for fear they would collapse.

One said: "It woke the dogs up".

The tremor damaged the facade of a church in the town of Plaisance and a house next door collapsed, Frantz Duval, a journalist with le Nouvelliste, said on Twitter.

A magnitude 5.2 aftershock on Sunday afternoon sent people rushing into the street in Port-de-Paix, with many vowing that they would not sleep inside their houses that night. Parliamentarian Alcide Audne told The Associated Press that two of the deaths occurred in the auditorium.
