
"I do want to share with you my visit with Chairman Kim Jong-un yesterday, the progress we made, .to make sure we are working together on our joint mission we've talked about before- the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula".
In their later meeting, Yang expressed Chinese frustration with Washington while avoiding specifics, telling Pompeo relations are "facing challenges".
Pompeo is on a whistle-stop tour around Asia mainly focused on North Korea's nuclear program, but upon arrival in Beijing, the agenda swiftly pivoted to the burgeoning acrimony between the world's two biggest economies, sparked by PresidentDonald Trump's trade war and fueled by his allegations that the Chinese government is "meddling" in next month's midterm elections.
"China and USA relations are at an important juncture and facing challenges", Yang said.
In a summit in April, the leaders of South and North Korea agreed to cooperate in declaring an end to the war this year, saying that they will seek multilateral talks involving the U.S. and possibly China.
Pompeo said on Sunday his latest, fourth trip to Pyongyang was "another step forward" to denuclearization and that he had a "good, productive conversation" with Kim, striking a cautious note by indicating more needed to be done.
Kim praised their "nice meeting", telling Pompeo via an interpreter following the morning's talks that it was "a very nice day that promises a good future. for both countries".
After spending about five hours in Beijing, Pompeo headed for the airport to return to Washington.

Responding to Wang's remarks, Pompeo said he wanted to come to Beijing to "have discussions".
The challenge for the US remains stark: American administrations for decades have been stymied by North Korean intransigence on its nuclear program, and the rapport between Trump and Kim hasn't resolved that issue. We continue to make progress on agreements made at Singapore Summit. He is to work with South Korea, Japan, China, Russia and other countries that have an interest in the talks.
Pompeo, however, played down the differences.
A senior USA official said getting a deal on denuclearisation is going to be a "long haul" in the immediate aftermath of Mr Pompeo's fourth visit to the isolated state's capital city. And so there'll be tactical places where we'll have debates and disagreements.
Trump met Kim in Singapore in June for the first-ever summit between the two countries, resulting in what critics say was only a vague commitment by the North Korean leader towards denuclearisation. It has not taken any steps to halt nuclear weapons or missile development.
This comes after Vice President Mike Pence accused China of attempted meddling in USA midterm elections and domestic policies.
Moon also said there was a possibility of Kim holding a summit with Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abe.
