GOP poised to elevate Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court

Lawyers for Christine Blasey Ford released a statement Friday from a friend of Ford's who says he is a corroborating witness to Ford's sexual assault allegation against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh - and criticized the Federal Bureau of Investigation for not interviewing him.

Announcements by Republican Susan Collins of ME and Democrat Joe Manchin of West Virginia that they'll support the conservative jurist made Saturday's confirmation vote a formality, an anticlimactic finale to a battle that riveted the nation for almost a month.

Murkowski has expressed unease with the sexual assault allegations lodged against Kavanaugh, which he denies.

Collins supported an additional FBI background check into the accusations, which stoked speculation that she might then break with Republicans and vote against Kavanaugh's nomination, but the results of that investigation - along with Bush's calls - paved the way for her support Friday.

"I think that the MS speech had a great impact, yes - I think it was a very important thing", Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One en route to a political rally in Topeka, Kansas.

Kavanaugh was sworn in as a justice Saturday evening in Washington after an extraordinarily fraught nomination that sparked angry protests, nail-biting votes and a national reckoning about sexual assault allegations and who should be believed.

Brett Kavanaugh's confirmation to the US Supreme Court appeared all but assured Friday after two key lawmakers signaled their support, in a major boost for President Donald Trump.

Trump also said women, far from being outraged at Kavanaugh, "were outraged at what happened to Brett Kavanaugh, outraged".

Based on the initial votes, Kavanaugh is expected to be confirmed for the lifetime appointment after final votes are cast on Saturday.

While she respects her colleagues' support for Kavanaugh, Murkowski said, "I also that think we're at a place where we need to think about the credibility and integrity of our institutions".

A procedural vote Friday made Saturday's confirmation a foregone conclusion.

Trump alleged Avenatti had made "false accusations about me" in the past and said he would love to see libel laws get tougher.

Kavanaugh would replace the retired Justice Anthony Kennedy, who was a swing vote on issues including abortion, campaign finance and same-sex marriage.

Democrats don't seem to have the votes to keep Brett Kavanaugh from joining the Supreme Court, but that's not stopping them from taking to the Senate floor in a parade of speeches into the early morning against the conservative jurist.

In a twist, Murkowski said she would state her opposition but vote "present" as a courtesy to Kavanaugh supporter Sen.

Trump has been holding rallies across the country as he tries to boost Republican turnout in November's midterm elections, which will determine which party will control the House and Senate during the second half of Trump's term. But I think Sen.

"My heart goes out to anyone who has experienced any type of sexual assault in their life", Manchin said. Protesters have roamed Capitol Hill corridors and grounds daily, raising anxieties and underscoring the passions the nomination fight has aroused.

Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer of NY called the fight "a sorry epilogue to the brazen theft of Justice Scalia's seat". "I do hope that Judge Kavanaugh will not allow the partisan nature this process took to follow him onto the court".

"Professor Ford has not asked for anything of the sort", attorney Debra Katz said to CNN.

Ford wrote Koegler an email saying that the person who assaulted her was the president's "favorite for SCOTUS", he said. "What she was trying to do was what she thought was the right thing to do as a citizen, which is to provide the information to the U.S. Senate so they could make the most informed decision possible".

"I don't always agree with his tweets, and I tell him that and give him my honest opinion and honest advice", she said.
