Hafeez Gets Pakistan Off to a Good Start

Haris Sohail struck his maiden worldwide century as Pakistan piled up 482 runs in their first innings on Day 2 of the first Test against Australia in Dubai on Monday. Both teams will also play three Twenty20 internationals after Tests.

But the second session belonged to Asif, who dismissed Usman Khawaja (85), Shaun Marsh (seven), Travis Head (nought) and Marnus Labuschagne (nought) in the space of 29 runs.

Lyon looked risky early with debutant Marnus Labuschagne appearing to chastise himself after failing to get his hands on a half-chance at bat-pad.

Pakistan are still in control of the game, mostly because of the bowlers' efforts, with a tall 325-run lead on the board. The first over after the interval brought the visitors even more joy with Babar Azam run out for 4. Sohail, however, couldn't carry on for much longer falling trying to play the late cut to Lyon only to feather it straight into the gloves of Paine for 110, his innings studded with eight glittering fours and two sixes.

Veteran all-rounder Hafeez, playing in his first test since 2016 and his 51st overall, frustrated Australia en route to his 10th century before being trapped in front of the wicket for 126 by pace bowler Peter Siddle in the final session.

Hosts Pakistan handed a debut to offspinner Bilal Asif, with 26-test seamer Wahab Riaz selected ahead of rookie Mir Hamza. Starc then finished off the innings catching the outside edge of Shah's bat for 3 as Pakistan lost their last six wickets for 72 runs.

Both Pakistan batsmen batted more fluently against the second new ball in the afternoon session as Australia's bowlers couldn't trouble them with either seam or spin. Finch and Khawaja started off pretty well, rotating the strike at every given chance.
