World's longest direct flight takes off from Singapore to NY

Well, if you happen to be travelling from Singapore to NY or vice versa in the future you could be about to embark on a record-breaking flight, as a new route is about to launch between the two destinations and in doing so, it will become the world's longest non-stop flight.

Singapore Airlines will launch, 11 October, the world's longest non-stop passenger flight.

But because carrying a massive amount of fuel adds weight, thus requiring even more fuel, the Airbus 350-900 has been designed for a lighter passenger load - with 67 seats in business class and 94 in economy.

Singapore Airlines launched the record-breaking route in 2004, but canceled it nine years later because of rising fuel prices.

He and his group met during the world's first commercial flight of the Airbus A380 double-decker plane operated by the airline in 2007 and discovered that everyone had a passion for flying.

The airline has said that the four pilots - two captains and two first officers - need to have at least 8 hours of rest.

"I'm a little anxious, I wonder what I'm going to do for 18 hours and 30 minutes" on the plane, 52-year-old Peggy Ang, a computer company executive, admitted before boarding. "We do a review twice a year and revise fares based on the market supply and demand situation", said David Lim, General Manager, India, Singapore Airlines, without getting into specifics of what changes had been made in the fare.

Singaporean software engineer Joel Kang, 30, who lives in NY, said: "It is my birthday, so this is my present to myself". The aircraft can fly for over 20 hours or 18,000 kilometers (11,250 miles) non-stop. "The plane has high ceilings, sophisticated LED lighting, nearly vertical sidewalls and a low noise level". By using this system, the plan burns 25 percent less fuel as compared to the other aircraft with the similar size, said Airbus.

Today's flight will top the current longest direct link between cities - Auckland to Doha with Qatar Airways, which takes 17 hours 40 minutes.

'My cousin said 'hey, this is in the press.' I'm going to take pictures and show her, ' she said.

The airline is not planning to offer any economy bookings on the route.

The airline's revenue contribution from the Americas region is now at 14 percent, down from 20 percent in 2013 due to the loss of the non-stop flights, Corrine Png, CEO of transport research firm Crucial Perspective, said.

The company is the first airline in the world to operate the A350-900ULR plane.

Four airlines now connect Singapore to six USA cities.
