Mueller Will Issue Findings on Collusion and Obstruction After Midterms

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein will appear before two House committees next week to answer questions about allegations he talked about secretly taping President Trump and sought to remove him from office, the committees confirmed Thursday.

The interview will be conducted by House Judiciary Committee Chairmen Bob Goodlatte (R-VA) and Trey Gowdy (R-SC) along with Ranking Members Jerry Nadler (D-NY) and Elijah Cummings (D-MD). The transcript of the proceeding will be released to the public after a review by the intelligence community to scrub any classified information.

That means Meadows, Freedom Caucus co-founder Jim Jordan and other hard-line conservatives who have been vocal participants in the investigations will not be able to question Rosenstein.

President Trump has been critical of the deputy attorney general, but says he does not want to fire him.

There was speculation weeks ago that Rosenstein would be fired or resign following a New York Times report that he had discussed secretly recording Trump past year. "We need to get to the bottom of these very serious claims". Meadows wrote on Twitter that Rosenstein "has not cooperated with Congress, failed to be transparent about his actions, and shown a lack of candor in the way he's characterized a number of events". Speaking to the Wall Street Journal, Rosenstein said the investigation has been "appropriate and independent" - a stark contrast to opponents who say it is a corrupt and biased attempt to attack President Donald Trump.

Axios reported on September 24 that Rosenstein offered to resign in a conversation with White House chief of staff John Kelly because he believed he was about to be fired.

Democrats have called the meeting with Rosenstein part of a Republican effort to undermine special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into possible coordination between Russian Federation and the Trump campaign during the 2016 presidential election.
