Treasury employee accused in leak linked to Mueller’s probe

The Justice Department did not release the reporter's identity, but charging documents listed almost a dozen articles published by BuzzFeed News over the past year and a half. She told investigators she is a whistleblower.

A spokesman for the news organization declined to comment.

Edwards, who lives in Quinton, Viriginia, is scheduled to appear in federal court in Virginia on Wednesday afternoon, pending prosecution in Manhattan federal court on charges of conspiracy and unauthorized disclosures of SARs.

The court documents also indicate the FBI has investigated one of Edwards' bosses, an associate director of FinCEN, noting that person exchanged 325 text messages with the reporter in question during the month when the first story appeared citing SARs reports.

The Department of Justice has filed a criminal complaint against a Treasury Department employee accused of leaking sensitive information related to the trial of former Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort.

The articles detailed suspicious activity reports related to individuals who have been caught up in special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Russian collusion with the Trump campaign, including former Trump campaign chairman Manafort and Gates, a former Trump campaign deputy chairman.

According to Bloomberg News, while the reporter Edwards is accused of leaking to isn't identified, "the articles cited by prosecutors were written by journalists at BuzzFeed - the most recent having been published October 15".

"We hope today's charges remind those in positions of trust within government agencies that the unlawful sharing of sensitive documents will not be tolerated", said U.S. Attorney Geoffrey Berman in a statement. Although Mr. Wolfe was not accused of leaking information to the press, he was snared in the FBI's investigation of the disclosure of confidential information related to Trump campaign figure Carter Page. On their own, suspicious activity reports often do not mean very much.

Prosecutors said that when Edwards was arrested, she was found to be carrying the flash drive and a cellphone containing "numerous communications" between her and the reporter on the encrypted messaging app.

"You know, I have to think as long as people are kind of getting information out there that's not supposed to be out there, we're going to see more of them under this administration", Rodgers said. Edwards also sent the reporter internal Treasury Department emails, investigative memos and intelligence assessments, prosecutors allege.

Past year a contractor to the National Security Agency was arrested for leaking then-classified information on Russian attempts to hack U.S. election systems to The Intercept, a rival to Buzzfeed in publishing national security-related scoops. At a brief court appearance in Alexandria, she was released on $100,000 bond and instructed to appear next month in court in NY.

The judge set several conditions for Edwards's release, including barring her from contact with the reporter referred to in the criminal complaint or any FinCEN employee outside the presence of her lawyer.
