Rockets offering four first-round picks for Jimmy Butler

It appears the Rockets would very much like to bring in Jimmy Butler.

The Houston Rockets have offered four first round picks to the Minnesota Timberwolves for Jimmy Butler.

Butler would join all-star's Chris Paul and James Harden to form a new big three in Houston.

The Rockets, considered the second best team in the Western Conference to the Golden State Warriors, are offering what constitutes the maximum number of first-round picks allowable in a deal, ESPN reported.

Thibodeau and company are hoping the pass of time will drive Butler's stock up some more, making time the Wolves' only ally, as teams have been hesitant to offer a war chest of compensation for a player that is clearly looking to leave the Twin Cities.

The lottery protections on picks in this proposed deal would be limited.

Butler, 29, is averaging 24.8 points, 5.3 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 3.8 steals in four appearances this season. The Timberwolves are 2-3, most recently coming off a 112-105 loss to the Raptors in Toronto Wednesday night. Butler will become a free agent at season's end, so four first-round picks would be quite the expense for what in all likelihood would be a rental player.

Houston has struggled its way to a 1-3 start, with the 21st-ranked offense, 20th-ranked defense and 23rd-ranked net rating in the league.

The Rockets, who have been tied to Butler ever since the star swingman requested a trade from the Timberwolves, reportedly were turned off by Minnesota's initial asking price in a potential blockbuster deal. Both teams will be back in action on Friday.
