Daniel Ricciardo's 'mighty' pole lap stuns Red Bull boss Christian Horner

Daniel Ricciardo denied his Red Bull teammate Max Verstappen pole position in the dying seconds of qualifying for today's Mexican Grand Prix, but all eyes will be on championship leader Lewis Hamilton, who starts from third, knowing that he will claim a fifth world drivers' title if he finishes no worse than seventh.

Red Bull locked out the front row on Saturday with Daniel Ricciardo pipping teammate Max Verstappen to pole by just 0.026s.

If second place on the starting grid left the Dutch youngster feeling sore, the front row lockout was still Red Bull's first since the U.S. Grand Prix of 2013.

"I knew putting the lap together would be crucial as always, and Max showed the pace was in the vehicle all weekend".

Verstappen fumed as Ricciardo celebrated, but Hamilton - in third - was considerably happier as he qualified ahead of title rival Vettel to edge towards the drivers' championship.

Vettel finished just two-tenths off Ricciardo's pole time, and just one-tenth behind Hamilton, who pipped him on his final effort.

"I knew it was there somewhere. We just need to try and convert it into a big result tomorrow". "We had a hard day yesterday and it was a big improvement today so obviously, yesterday we were much, much further back so I wasn't expecting to be up as high as we got but the team did a great job last night in analyzing and moving forward today".

"The whole qualifying was crap", the youngster told the global television audience. I think ... it's having the mindset of really extracting the best performance out of every single day.

"I am really happy with it", he said.

Therefore, the Renault in the back of Verstappen's Red Bull - usually inferior to the might of Mercedes and Ferrari - is on a more competitive playing field this weekend. "You get a nice tow from the guys up ahead so naturally I'm going to be fighting to at least gain a position but of course I'm aware of the Bulls ahead".

Hamilton won his fourth title in Mexico a year ago after starting third and then having to fight back from last to ninth following an opening lap collision with Vettel, who had been on pole but lost out to Verstappen.
