Kroger shooting investigated as possible hate crime

"We are pursuing all avenues of the investigation no matter where that takes us or what it involves".

"The neighborhood has to unite together, we have to band together as one to say that we will protect our neighborhood". Both victims were African American, and neither was believed to have known the gunman and the specific motive was unclear.

Russell Coleman, U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Kentucky, said Friday that federal investigators are looking into whether this broke federal law, and that includes hate crimes, according to The Associated Press.

Police received a call about 3 p.m. reporting the shooting, Rogers said.

The document says 51-year-old Gregory Bush walked to the back of the Louisville Kroger store, pulled a gun from his waistband and shot a man in the back of the head, and then kept shooting the man multiple times "as he was down on the floor".

Rogers says the man fired multiple rounds at the man inside the store, and shot the female victim multiple times out in the parking lot.

Bystander video shows a white man in a distinctive neon-yellow shirt trying to drive away while an officer chases after him on foot.

Accused shooter Gregory Bush, 51, is charged with two counts of murder and ten counts of wanton endangerment.

Keith Gunn was quoted by the Courier Journal of Louisville on Thursday as saying that Vicki Lee Jones was retired from her job as an office administrator at the Veterans Affairs hospital. He said he could not confirm whether the gunman was armed when he attempted to go inside. I won't shoot you. "Whites don't shoot whites".

It was not clear whether Zinninger's father was the armed bystander who Rogers said exchanged gunfire with the suspect.

Bush arrived at the First Baptist Church of Jeffersontown shortly after Wednesday service concluded.

"Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families of the Vicki Jones and Maurice Stallard whose lives were cut short in this senseless act - and especially want to remember the grandson who was with his grandfather at the time of the shooting", said Jeffersontown Mayor Bill Dieruf in a statement. The boy was physically unharmed, but most certainly traumatized, the mayor said, adding, "He was there and can not unsee what he has seen".

Stallard is the father of Kellie Watson, who serves in the mayor's office as his chief racial equity officer.

The mayor shared his outrage Thursday over what he called an "epidemic of gun violence" that "hit close to home".

Jones was one of two people fatally shot at a Kroger grocery store in Jeffersontown, Kentucky, on Wednesday. "Can't we all agree that that is unacceptable?"

"Somehow, a few have become so beholden to politics that they place a higher value on that than on the lives of our fellow Americans", said Fischer, a Democrat running for re-election. He added that a SWAT team seized a cellphone and computers from the home in Jeffersontown where Bush was living with his parents. He also was charged with assaulting his elderly parents in January 2009.

An arrest citation said Bush's parents were punched and choked, and they told police they were "terrified of (his) unpredictable behavior".
