At least 7 Coptic Christians killed in bus attack in Egypt

At least seven people were killed and more than a dozen wounded in an attack on a bus transporting Coptic Christians to a monastery in Minya, Egypt, a local archbishop told Reuters.

Friday's attack is the second to target pilgrims heading to the St. Samuel the Confessor monastery in as many years.

Egypt's government news service released a statement from an unnamed security official saying at least 12 people were injured.

Egypt's Coptic Christians have repeatedly been targeted by the Islamic State jihadist group.

Egyptian state television said security forces were on Friday afternoon still in pursuit of the attackers.

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi said he was "deeply saddened" by the attack and vowed to push ahead with Egypt's campaign against "terrorism".

The main road to the monastery has been closed according to security instructions as it is located in a unsafe zone in the desert, in addition to the unavailability of communication network in its surroundings, the source said, adding that the victims used sub-roads to reach the monastery.

Coptic Christians are a religious minority in Egypt, making up about 10 percent of the country's population.

In April 2017, twin suicide bombings, claimed by Islamic State, targeted two Coptic churches, killing 48 people.

In December 2017 an IS gunman killed nine people in an attack on a church in a south Cairo suburb.

A year earlier, a suicide bomber killed nearly 30 worshipers at a church in Cairo located in the Saint Mark's Cathedral complex, the seat of the Coptic papacy.

Egypt has witnessed a spate of militant attacks since 2013, when the army deposed Islamist president Mohammad Morsi, the country's first democratically elected leader, after mass protests against his rule.

Alongside attacks against Copts, the jihadists have killed hundreds of soldiers and policemen in Egypt in recent years and were allegedly behind a November 2017 attack against a mosque in north Sinai that killed more than 300 people.
