Morata double gives Chelsea victory over Palace

The Blues duo are now out of favour at Stamford Bridge and the club's head coach explained why their appearances have been limited.

Manchester City and Liverpool remain the teams to beat but Chelsea are closing the gap, manager Maurizio Sarri said after his side extended their unbeaten start to the season to 11 games with a 3-1 win against Crystal Palace on Sunday.

Drinkwater played alongside another Chelsea man N'Golo Kante as Leicester surprisingly won the Premier League, but he has failed find that form again, with only 12 appearances since moving to Stamford Bridge.

"So I thought that it was the same here".

"I think it's very hard to cover a gap of 30 points in six months, but we will try".

"That's the position I've always played and I feel good there". I don't know [if they have a future at Chelsea]. The Blues may have lost two of the last three league meetings between the sides, but they are a different proposition under Sarri and it would take a courageous punter to oppose them here.

- Townsend has scored three Premier League goals against Chelsea - more than he has against any other opponent.

Maurizio Sarri arrived in English football with a to-do list and a half, and barely any time to get stuck into it.

"Ninety minutes are 90 minutes".

"I have to look at all competitions - 90 minutes is 90 minutes".

"It is my work, I think".

He has also overseen unbeaten starts in the Europa League and EFL Cup, using 26 players in total. We needed the three points.

"The situation is that Drinkwater for me is not suitable for a midfield with two midfielders", Sarri said.

"In Naples, everybody wanted to win Serie A. Only Serie A. So maybe this atmosphere influenced my choices".

Roy Hodgson did a good job in keeping Palace up last season after the debacle of Frank de Boer but did nothing to truly improve the club over the summer. It is hard to think you can recover this gap in one season, or in six months.

The Spaniard's goals came either side of a a well-taken Townsend strike which temporarily gave Palace belief, before Pedro made the points safe.

"I think that we have worked very well".

"I can score a hat-trick so it was not the ideal day but we will take the three points", said Morata.

"At the moment we need only to try to cover the large part of this gap".

"It would be great if Loftus-Cheek could play and it would be another step in his advancement here".
