Magic Johnson Scolds Luke Walton over Lakers' Poor Start

Los Angeles Lakers president Magic Johnson is unhappy with the state of the team and took out some of his frustration on coach Luke Walton in a recent meeting.

ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski reports the meeting elevated the awareness within the coaching staff that the pressure is on to make the Lakers competitive in the near future.

Throughout his tenure with the Lakers, Johnson has earned an internal reputation for an often-time volatile management style, including with his handling of Walton and the coaching staff, sources said.

L.A. opened the season in Portland just over two weeks ago and has been on a roller-coaster ride ever since, starting 0-3, winning two in a row, then losing two in a row, prompting the Johnson-Walton session after seven games.

Coaching LeBron James isn't always easy and coaching James with the Los Angeles Lakers might be even tougher. Everyone wants to play but for us to be successful this year, we need everyone at different times int he season stepping up to help us win games.

To start the game, it looked like the Lakers were going to cruise to an easy victory.

Due to the slow start and some questionable rotations and decisions, head coach Luke Walton has already been thrown on the hot seat by some people. With Saturday's win, they now sit at 4-5. "We were able to get stops in the fourth quarter and we were getting some momentum on offense".

"LeBron closed them out over the final three minutes", Walton said of James.

"Great to snap that", James said of the Lakers' streak of futility against Portland. "The numbers say we're 11th but it doesn't feel like it, but we are". While Walton won't be fired soon, there is the potential for him to see the door if things don't change.

Entering the season, several executives and coaches around the league told ESPN that Walton had perhaps the most challenging job in the National Basketball Association and wondered how he would make a roster of one-year veterans with strong personalities and a young developing core work best around LeBron James. "So, any team that has Tyson is going to be better for it".

The headlines from Saturday will lead with the addition of Tyson Chandler.
