Ventura County Sheriff Geoff Dean told reporters early Thursday his colleague died at a hospital. Sergeant Ron Helus responded to an active shooter at a bar in Thousand Oaks.

The 33-year-old served with 2nd Combat Engineer Battalion, 2nd Marine Division, deploying to Afghanistan in 2007 with the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit, according to the outlet.

Teylor Whittler told "Fox & Friends" she was at the country bar celebrating a friend's 21st birthday when the shooting occurred. "He looked like he knew what he was doing".

The gunman who carried out the mass shooting is also dead, bringing the fatality total to 13.

The majority of the people inside the bar are believed to have been college students, authorities said.

"There's no doubt that they saved lives by going in there and engaging with the suspect", said Dean, who was set to retire on Friday.

Sarah DeSon was one of the people who made it out of the Borderline Bar & Grill alive.

Dominguez said he and his son John managed to escape from the bar and run for their lives to their vehicle.

Helus loved to go fishing in the Sierra Nevada Mountains with his son, according to Sgt. Eric Buschow of the Ventura County Sheriff's Office, who worked with him for 29 years.

"I've learned it doesn't matter what community you're in", Dean told reporters when asked if he was surprised this happened in Thousand Oaks.

Helus rushed toward the shooting and immediately exchanged fire with the shooter inside the bar, Dean said. "I saw him point to the back at the cash register and he just kept firing".

He said he and others smashed their way out of the bar onto a balcony and then jumped down to safety. "My friend is the DJ so she cut off the music, we just heard a lot of mayhem".

"We just tried to get down as fast as we could and get out of there". "I heard at least eight to 10 shots and I got outside and I still heard the shots".

The security guard at the bar, who was unarmed, was shot during the incident. "There is blood everywhere and the suspect is part of that".

"When I talked to the parishioners there, I followed up on the rabbi".

"Many of them were injured as they did so, on the glass, but they survived".

Numerous law enforcement agencies were on-scene, including the FBI and the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. "I'll never get back".

It was the latest mass shooting to rock the United States, six days after the death of two women at a yoga class in Tallahassee, Florida and 12 days after an anti-Semitic gunman entered a synagogue in Pittsburgh and killed 11 worshippers.

President Donald Trump tweeted that he had "been fully briefed on the awful shooting", the latest chapter in America's epidemic of gun violence that came just 10 days after a gunman killed 11 worshippers at a synagogue in Pittsburgh.

US President Donald Trump said on Twitter that he has been "fully briefed on the awful shooting".

Last year, a country music festival in Las Vegas was the scene of the worst mass shooting in modern U.S. history.
