WHO report cautions against antibiotics overuse worldwide

Do not take a swab or use antibiotics for the management of a leg ulcer without clinical infection. And it is better not to mention the role of the government agencies responsible for regulating the quality and use of medicines.

Chair of the Choosing Wisely advisory group, Dr Derek Sherwood, says a future without antibiotics is nearly incomprehensible - but it could become a reality.

"Overuse and misuse of antibiotics are the leading causes of antimicrobial resistance".

This year, in commemoration of World Antibiotic Awareness Week, the MoHASHS in collaboration with the TCI Hospital has planned a number of events/activities.

"Antibiotics are powerful tools for fighting disease, but if used inappropriately in people, animals or other applications, it can set the stage for antibiotic resistance", said National Pork Board's Heather Fowler, DVM, Pork Checkoff's director of producer and public health.

Buying antibiotics from the drugstores in this country is as easy as buying anything from roadside small grocery shops.

WITH this World Antibiotic Awareness Week, experts have raised their concern over the persistent overuse and misuse of antibiotics as well as inappropriate prescriptions for them. "All types of microbes, including many viruses and parasites, are becoming resistant".

"Antibiotic resistance is threatening our ability to safely and effectively provide medical care to many patients, including organ and bone marrow transplants, joint replacements and other complex surgeries, cancer chemotherapy, and care of preterm infants", IDSA President Cynthia Sears, MD, FIDSA, said.

In 2018 alone, the Pork Checkoff funded almost $400,000 across multiple research areas to evaluate antibiotic alternatives and other methods to minimise on-farm antibiotic use. In 49 countries, the Access category represents more than 50% of antibiotic consumption.

Since 2016, World Health Organization has helped 57 low- and middle-income countries collect data to create a standardized system for tracking antibiotic use.

"However, the GHA carried out its own study into this subject in 2014 and, since that time, it has formulated and implemented different initiatives to curb and rationalise its own antibiotic prescribing". But in Bangladesh, those are treated as over-the-counter (OTC) items.

Antibiotics are not effective against viral infections like the common cold, flu, most sore throats, bronchitis, and many sinus and ear infections. The ministry of health has been doing nothing to control such abuse. This alignment will enable comparison of antibiotic use between the human and animal sector in the future.

Gonorrhea, sexually transmitted disease had become resistant to antibiotic worldwide and rendered as untreatable disease. Medical scientists are increasingly anxious by the emergence of a number of superbugs in recent years.

Last year, we were given over 290 tablets or capsules across a range of antibiotics including co-amoxiclav, Erythromycin, Ciprofloxacin and Pyrazinamide. Leading global pharmaceutical companies have employed enough of resources to develop antibiotics which are effective against superbugs.

He called on members of the public to be cautious when patronising antibiotics. However, there is still time to deal with the issue.
