American killed by Sentinelese tribe in Andaman and Nicobar Islands

The man, identified as John Allen Chau, had illegally ventured onto the North Sentinel Island, which is out of bounds for visitors and is home to the Sentinelese tribe.

After the fishermen dropped him off, they reportedly saw him get struck by arrows but keep walking.

The next morning, they saw his body "being dragged and then buried", Yadav said. They have lived on North Sentinel, a forested island around the size of Manhattan, for around 55,000 years. Contact with the islands' indigenous people is banned to protect their way of life.

Prince declined to discuss what Chau had told him about his plans for traveling in India or the islands, saying instead he wanted to focus his comments on who Chau was.

International Christian Concern has reported that Chau was a missionary who "had expressed a strong desire to meet with the Sentinelese tribes to preach Christianity". The party found "abandoned" villages and some children, who they took back to Port Blair "in the interest of science".

Police have filed a murder case against unknown tribals and arrested six fishermen who helped Chau, and an Andaman resident, K S Alexander, for violating rules that caused the death.

A young American adventurer who was killed with arrows by a tribe of remote hunter-gatherers on an Indian Ocean island was trying to bring Christianity to the tribe, according to notes written by the would-be missionary.

Chau's family posted a tribute on his Instagram and said they forgave those "reportedly responsible for his death".

"Words can't express the sadness we have experienced about this report. We also ask for the release of those friends he had in the Andaman Islands".

Indian authorities say Chau was shot with arrows by the tribesmen as he reached shore, and his body is still on the island. Tourists have previously bribed local officials in a bid to spend time with the tribespeople.

The Sentinelese hunt and gather in the forest, and fish in the coastal waters. A volley of arrows from the Sentinelese had forced a helicopter to return without retrieving the bodies. In 2006, two local fishermen were killed by the tribes.

The Sentinelese tribe, which traces its roots back to the Stone Age and is protected under Indian law, is notorious for its hostility to strangers.

They are the Sentinelese, one of the last remaining groups to reject contact with the outside world.

"Why are they so angry?"

Pathak says Chau's death can not be confirmed until they recover the body. Pathak told TOI that the Indian Coast Guard sailed close to the island and superintendent of police Jatin Nariwal made an aerial survey, but could not recover the body.

"We recently learned from an unconfirmed report that John Allen Chau was reportedly killed in India while reaching out to members of the Sentinelese Tribe", it says.

"If he was taking a risk, he was very aware of it", Prince said, recalling the time Chau told him about being bitten by a rattlesnake. "Do not blame the natives if I am killed". As such, visits to the island are heavily restricted by the Indian government.

No one knows exactly how many Sentinelese live on North Sentinel Island.

Police said in a statement that they had launched an investigation into Chau's death after being contacted by the USA consulate in the southern Indian city of Chennai.
