Two huge earthquakes have struck Alaska buckling roads

A almost empty produce bin for bananas is shown at a grocery store in Anchorage, Alaska, on Sunday, Dec. 2, 2018, two days after a magnitude 7.0 quake was centered about 7 miles north of the city.

In the nearby Matanuska-Susitna Borough, multiple roads were closed, collapsed and cracked.

Public schools and many businesses closed early as power outages and disruption of phone services were widespread.

CBS News correspondent Carter Evans reports that despite the damage, there were no fatalities reported.

Anchorage Mayor Ethan Berkowitz says the city is on the road to returning to normal a day after a magnitude 7.0 quake struck. According to the scientific agency, the seismic activity was centred about 7 miles (12 kilometres) north of Anchorage.

Roads and bridges appeared to have been hardest hit.

The massive tremor triggered a tsunami warning for coastal areas of Alaska's Cook Inlet and southern Kenai Peninsula. The 1200km Alaska oil pipeline was shut down while crews were sent to inspect it for damage.

It was not immediately known if anyone was injured when the portion of the roadway collapsed.

At one time, power was out to almost 50,000 residents because of the quake.

The Federal Highway Commission released the funds Saturday after it said it received a request from Alaska Gov. Bill Walker and the state transportation commissioner, Marc Luiken.

A magnitude-7 earthquake jolted southern Alaska on Friday morning buckling roads and damaging buildings in Anchorage the state's largest city. Road crew and residents surveyed the damage on the Minnesota Drive Expressway while a stranded

"We've had some memorable earthquakes, but I've never experienced anything as strong or unnerving as that quake", said John.

Thousands of people remain without power and it will take weeks to fix all infrastructure wrecked by a huge 7.0 quake, though President Donald Trump has allowed funds for federal agencies to coordinate disaster relief efforts.

Southern Alaska has a high risk of earthquakes because of tectonic plates sliding past each other under the region.

He says it requires buildings to be created to resist possible ground motion determined by location and natural disaster histories.

Video on social media showed various images of damage from the quake, including supermarket floors strewn with items that tumbled from shelves and television station KTVA's studio in shambles.

One photo shows a newsroom based in the city that felt the blow of the quake. CNN reported that TV station KTUU, an NBC affiliate, also was knocked off the air.

A video posted to Twitter showed a buckled road on a highway exit ramp leading to the airport and a stranded auto.

The natural disaster damaged infrastructure of the largest city of anchorage, which is the largest in Alaska.
