May faces more Brexit woes after United Kingdom minister quits

Labour said it is ready to combine with other opposition parties to start proceedings for contempt of Parliament unless the legal opinion of Attorney General Geoffrey Cox is published in full.

May's government is also facing a battle in Parliament over confidential advice from the country's top law officer about the Brexit deal.

The deal has proved highly divisive and all the signs point to MPs rejecting in a crucial vote next week.

Opposition parties and the small Northern Irish party that props up May's minority government are furious that it only provided an outline of the legal basis for its Brexit deal after parliament voted to be given the full advice.

The party, that has 10 MPs in Westminster, has already abstained on a number of parliamentary votes in recent weeks in a warning to the prime minister that they are not bluffing about their threats to abandon her.

"The refusal of the Government to comply sends a very clear message about the Brexit deal - that it is bad for Britain, satisfies nobody and will weaken our economy and our voice in the world". "I have seen first-hand the European Union stack the deck against us time and time again", he said.

Ministers chose not to oppose the motion - tabled by Labour under an arcane procedure known as the humble address - as they feared a damaging Commons defeat.

May said that during her meetings with world leaders she had updated them on the Brexit deal and told them it would be a good deal for the global economy as well as worldwide firms which have invested in Britain or that use European bases to supply the United Kingdom market.

The letter was said to be so sensitive that ministers were given numbered copies to read which they were not allowed to take from the room afterwards. I know it's challenging but my view is. that we've got to make those arguments and we've got to look properly at what those alternatives are, ' he told the BBC's Andrew Marr Show. "We've got a wish-list of aspirations that we intend to negotiate with the European Union (after) we've lost our voice, our veto and our vote".

"That's my view as a former global lawyer, but it is consistent if not identical with all of the formal advice I received".

The government said after the vote that it would now publish the full advice.

"Although I accept the long-standing convention that Cabinet legal advice should be kept confidential, it's well-established that in exceptional circumstances that convention does not apply".

May sealed a deal with European Union leaders a week ago that would see Britain leave the bloc on March 29 with continued close ties, but the odds look stacked against her getting it approved by a deeply divided British parliament.

If it is decided that a contempt had occurred, the committee can recommend a suitable punishment which is then put back to MPs to agree.

Sam Gyimah, the latest minister to quit the Government over Theresa May's Brexit plan, has dismissed her agreement with Brussels as a "deal in name only".

'This is an unprecedented situation and that's why we've got an unprecedented situation just tomorrow when the attorney general will be making a statement to parliament, ' Conservative Party Chairman Brandon Lewis told Sky News.

He also said Labour would seek a vote of no confidence in the government if she lost the vote, a widely forecast outcome.
