Huawei executive due to appear in court

When Meng was arrested, Chinese President Xi Jinping and US President Donald Trump were in Buenos Aires together at the G20 summit, reaching a 90-day truce in the ongoing trade war.

The United States has also been looking since at least 2016 into whether Huawei violated US sanctions against Iran, Reuters reported in April.

Another U.S. official told Reuters that while it was a Justice Department matter and not orchestrated in advance by the White House, the case could send a message that Washington is serious about what it sees as Beijing's violations of global trade norms.

The arrest, revealed by Canadian authorities late on Wednesday, was part of a USA investigation into an alleged scheme to use the global banking system to evade US sanctions against Iran, people familiar with the probe told Reuters.

"Obviously, Washington is resorting to a despicable rogue's approach as it can not stop Huawei's 5G advance in the market", it said.

A Japanese official said though that no decision has been made.

Meng Wanzhou, a vice-chair of the Chinese technology giant, and daughter of its founder Ren Zhengfei, was arrested in transit through Vancouver airport on December 1 and is sought for extradition by the US.

Details of the case against Meng, to be heard in the Supreme Court of British Columbia, remain sparse.

She faces extradition to the United States where sources claim she is wanted for questioning over possible sanctions violations, and is due to appear in court for a bail hearing later today.

"So not respecting this particular arrest, but Huawei is one company we've been concerned about". She would also have to give up her passport, he said.

Without providing any further detail, Bolton said that Huawei is a company that USA officials have been concerned about for a number of reasons.

If Meng fights extradition, her case could go on for years, lawyers said, pointing to examples like Lai Changxing, a Chinese businessman who fled to Canada after he was implicated in a bribery case and fought extradition to China for 12 years.

Huawei is one of the world's largest telecommunications equipment and services providers.

Liu Weidong, a China-US affairs expert from the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, told the South China Morning Post: "We'll see more cases like this over the next three months, sanctioning China's state-owned enterprises and individuals, to boost momentum on the US side".

He also refused to elaborate on whether the arrest was related to the sanctions against Iran.

US National Security Adviser John Bolton told NPR that he had already known about Meng's arrest.

More recently, the probe has included the company's use of HSBC Holdings Plc to make illegal transactions involving Iran, people familiar with the investigation said.

China has expressed extreme displeasure at the detainment of Meng Wanzhou and demanded her immediate release.
