China behind Marriott hotel breach, may be preparing for more hacks

It was reported that guest names, mailing addresses, phone numbers, passport numbers, dates of birth, and Starwood Preferred Guest ("SPG") account information was stolen. It said the Trump administration also plans to declassify intelligence reports to reveal Chinese hacking efforts dating to at least 2014.

We're starting to get a clearer picture of who authorities believe is responsible for the massive hack of the Marriott hotel chain in recent weeks that compromised the data of more than 500 million customers.

Private investigators involved in a probe into the breach had previously discovered hacking tools, techniques and procedures that were used in earlier cyberattacks that have been linked to Chinese hackers.

Marriott, which operates more than 5,800 properties in more than 110 countries, says it is the top hotel provider to the United States government and military personnel.

China has reportedly been trying to build a database containing USA government officials' personal information.

The Times also cited four unnamed U.S. officials who said there could be indictments against Chinese hackers working for the intelligence services and the military. The Trump administration is also in the middle of preparing an indictment against Chinese hackers working for the intelligence services.

The Chinese are, obviously, denying everything.

Passport numbers, which are not usually collected in data breaches, may have been a particularly valuable discovery for the hackers, the Post said.

Marriott acquired Starwood, which includes such brands as Sheraton, W Hotels and St. Regis, in 2016.

"We consider them a strategic competitor", he added, referring to China, the world's second largest economy.

Marriott on Tuesday reiterated its previous comment on the data breach, saying in a statement: "Our primary objectives in this investigation are figuring out what occurred and how we can best help our guests".

A Marriott spokeswoman said it had "no information about the cause of this incident" and hadn't speculated about the attacker's identity.

A case filed in October marked the first time that a Chinese Ministry of State Security intelligence officer was extradited to the United States for trial.

"If offered evidence, the relevant Chinese departments will carry out investigations according to the law", it was said.
