Suns to have Ariza away from team Saturday after trade falls apart

It looks, however, like the confusion might not have been the Suns' fault. The Wizards made the trade call with Dillon Brooks involved in the deal heading to Phoenix. In 26 games played with Phoenix this season Ariza is shooting 37.9 per cent from deep on 5.3 attempts per game.

Ariza has been on the block for the last few weeks as the Suns have not gotten off to any semblance of a good start this year, but he is ineligible to be dealt until December 15. When news first broke that the Lakers were engaged in trade talks with the Suns, it was Caldwell-Pope being mentioned by Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN as the player being shipped out of Los Angeles. He's been out with a knee injury.

Woj reported that the Suns were close to finalizing a deal to send Ariza to the Wizards, and in exchange, Washington would send Kelly Oubre to Memphis, and the Grizzlies would send Wayne Selden and Dillon Brooks to Phoenix, along with Austin Rivers. MarShon Brooks, 29, has spent the past two seasons with Memphis, appearing in 25 games as a reserve this season. Meanwhile, the Wizards were playing in Brooklyn on Saturday, and as CBS Sports' James Herbert reported, Oubre and Rivers left the arena thinking they'd been traded. Phoenix also would receive a draft pick as would Washington.

The deal was called off when the Suns learned the Grizzlies had meant to send them reserve guard MarShon Brooks, as opposed to Dillon Brooks, a second-year forward for Memphis.

Ariza is one of the most important trade assets for the Suns - and their best chance to bolster their backcourt and gain assets. This is the date players signing summer free agent deals are allowed to be included into trades. As a result, the Suns can really hold out for a deal that they like, and one of the offers from the Lakers did not fit their needs.

Information from ESPN's Zach Lowe was used in this report.
