Facebook faces civil rights backlash after US Senate report confirms voter suppression

The District of Columbia has fired the latest legal salvo against Facebook with a lawsuit seeking to punish the social networking company for allowing data-mining firm Cambridge Analytica to improperly access data from as many as 87 million users.

He said the Times's report "is yet another data point demonstrating that Facebook offers users far too little in the way of transparency about how their data is being used, and by whom".

The D.C. attorney general says in the suit that this exposed almost half of the district's residents' data to manipulation for political purposes during the 2016 presidential election, and alleges Facebook's "lax oversight and misleading privacy settings" had allowed the consulting firm to harvest the information.

The lawsuit was filed Wednesday by Karl Racine, the attorney general for the District of Columbia.

Facebook's woes mounted Wednesday as it faced a lawsuit alleging privacy violations related to data leaked to a consultancy working on Donald Trump's 2016 campaign, and as a new report suggested it shared more data with partners than it has acknowledged. After meeting with civil rights leaders and experts, Murphy wrote in the report, Facebook chose to focus the first phase of its audit on preventing voter intimidation and suppression ahead of the 2018 midterm elections.

In 2013, a researcher launched a Facebook app, promoted as a personality quiz, which claimed to generate a personality profile. Facebook also reportedly allowed Spotify, Netflix and the Royal Bank of Canada to read and delete users' private messages and to see all participants on a thread. Amazon got its hands on users' names and contact info.

The incoming chair of the House Judiciary Committee's antitrust subcommittee, Representative David Cicilline, tweeted: "Zuckerberg told Congress that Facebook users had "complete control" over their data".

Mr Soltani and three former employees of the F.T.C.'s consumer protection division, which brought the case that led to the consent decree, said in interviews that its data-sharing deals had probably violated the agreement. Company spokeswoman Katy Dormer directed The Daily Caller News Foundation to comments Steve Satterfield, director of privacy and public policy at Facebook, made Tuesday addressing the report. The groups also called for Facebook to fire Joel Kaplan, Facebook's VP of global public policy, who has drawn scrutiny over his links to conservative figures, including Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh.
