Gender gap in sub-Saharan Africa 'will take 135 years to close'

The forum's Global Gender Gap Report 2018 said South Korea's gender gap index was 0.657, compared with 0.673 of China and 0.662 of Japan, which ranked 103rd and 110th, respectively.

Compounding the gender gap in AI, particularly in wages, are where women are more prevalent - women in AI are only more represented in lower paying industries such as non-profits, education, and healthcare.

Categorised as the lowest-ranked country in South Asia, Pakistan closed 55 per cent of its overall gender gap as compared to Bangladesh and Sri Lanka which were the top-ranked countries in the region, having closed just over 72pc and almost 68pc of their overall gender gap, respectively.

The organization calculates that it will take 108 years to close the gender gap across politics, work, health and education, but 202 years to close the workplace gender gap. It was followed by other Nordic countries, with Norway in second, Sweden in third and Finland in fourth place.

Worldwide, the stagnant equality, in some areas the gap waxes, warned the WEF in its "Global Gender Gap Report, 2018".

Here's how the gender pay gap in the US compares to other countries.

In the area of artificial intelligence, women's participation rate was as low as 22 percent.

The report found that the economic opportunity gap - based on pay, participation and workplace advancement - has closed by only a small amount since the 2017 survey.

"It (India) needs to make improvements across the board, from women's participation to getting more women into senior and professional roles", WEF said.

The region scored in the middle of the range of the Global Gender Gap Index with an average remaining gender gap of 31.7 percent.

But at the same time, the report showed that there are now proportionately fewer women than men participating in the workforce, suggesting that automation is having a disproportionate impact on jobs traditionally performed by women.

WEF said that there was a year-on-year deterioration of political empowerment of women, "partly attributed to the lower tenure of women in head-of-state roles around the world".

Iceland remains the nation with the most level playing field between women and men, a ranking it's held for 10 straight years.

"In an era when human skills are increasingly important and complementary to technology, the world can not afford to deprive itself of women's talent in sectors in which talent is already scarce", said Klaus Schwab, founder and executive chairman of the WEF. Yahoo Finance's Adam Shapiro and Julie Hyman discuss with Saadia Zahidi, managing director at the World Economic Forum.

More of a surprise is the fact that the top 10 features Nicaragua, in 5th place, two sub-Saharan African countries - Rwanda (6th) and Namibia (10th) - and the Philippines in 8th place.
