Won’t let United States see missile at heart of nuclear dispute, says Russian Federation

Putin reaffirmed the long-held Russian argument that the USA presence in Syria is illegitimate because it hasn't been vetted by the UN Security Council or approved by Assad's government.

For decades the United States and the Soviet Union faced off amid a continual threat of nuclear war, eventually curbed by two major deals restricting such weapons: the 1972 Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty and the 1987 Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty.

"We are essentially witnessing the breakdown of the global arms control order and (the start of) an arms race", Putin told his annual news conference with hundreds of reporters.

But in a strong warning to Mr Trump, the Russian leader said he would do whatever was impossible to "ensure the safety" of his nation.

"It's very hard to imagine how the situation will develop (if the US quits the INF treaty)".

Asked about Russia's detention of Ukrainian sailors in the Kerch Strait last month, Putin laid the blame for increased military tensions at the door of the Ukrainian government.

US Director of National Intelligence Daniel Coats said on November 30 that Russian Federation has already deployed multiple battalions of 9M729 missiles and that they posed a direct threat to most of Europe and parts of Asia. "Of course, we'll have to ensure our own security".

Russian Federation has previously accused the U.S. of violating the treaty by installing a missile shield in Eastern Europe. "We're not achieving an advantage". Are the Americans not interested, do they not need them? We could very well take the fifth place in terms of size of economy.

The Russian leader, who said Moscow had developed nuclear weapons which he believed gave it an edge over other countries, warned the threat of a nuclear conflict was growing as a result of the USA moves.

"But at the same time if something like this would happen, this might lead to the collapse of the entire civilisation, maybe our planet".

"For mankind this is very bad, because it will take us to a risky point", Putin said, expressing concern about moves to lower the threshold for the use of nuclear weapons, including the USA decision to produce lower-yield missiles.

Putin, 66, has been in power, either as president or prime minister, since 1999.
