53 journalist deaths tied to work so far in 2018 — Newsmaker] Report

"The number of journalists targeted for murder in reprisal for their reporting almost doubled in 2018 from a year earlier, driving up the overall count of journalists killed on the job", the CPJ said in the report, which highlighted the killing of US-based Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi in Turkey.

The annual report of the "reporters without borders" referred to it as a "frightening character" that 36 journalists have been killed outside of War zones. From that number 34 were singled out for murder.

The number of journalists who were murdered this year for their reporting almost doubled, according to a report released Wednesday by the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ). While the group notes that it distinguishes "between journalists who were deliberately targeted and those who were killed while reporting in the field", it nevertheless lumps the United States among some unusual bedfellows. NOTE: Not to diminish the terrible deaths, but only four were active journalists, the other a sales rep. Forty-seven journalists were killed in 2017, and 50 journalists were killed 2016, according to CPJ.

In addition, the committee said the imprisonment of journalists has been on the rise.

Turkey remains the worst offender, CPJ reported.

Afghanistan is 2018's deadliest country for journalists.

Afghanistan was the deadliest country, with 15 reporters killed - 10 of whom died in a series of attacks in Kabul in April, for which ISIS claimed responsibility.

The Paris-based group documented 63 professional journalists worldwide who died in 2018. If deranged murderer Jarrod Ramos, a longtime paranoid convinced the entire world was out to get him, had not made a decision to open fire on people he had been stalking and harassing since 2011, no journalists would have died in the United States at all.

The U.S. saw an unusually high number of journalist deaths in 2018. The shooting was the deadliest single attack on the media in recent US history. Gunman Jarrod Ramos shot and killed four journalists and one Capital Gazette employee.

China continued to be the world's biggest jailer of journalists, with 60 now detained in the country according to the report.

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced last week that the United States is still investigating the killing. "The killing of journalists is in the United States in direct relation to their work is thankfully rare", CPJ told TheDCNF.

Part of the problem is that the number of journalists killed around the world is relatively small, reprehensible as those killings are. For instance, Reporters Without Borders included the two journalists who died covering the storm.

The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) reported that at least 60 journalists were killed in 2018.

Both reports cited an alarming increase in reprisals against reporters, highlighted by what CPJ called the "brazen murder" of Washington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi in the Saudi Arabian consulate in Istanbul. Khashoggi was a native of Saudi Arabia, but fiercely critical of its ruling family.

Saudi Arabia on Thursday said it was creating government bodies to boost oversight of its intelligence operations, in the wake of global outrage over critic Jamal Khashoggi's murder.

Sure, but in the Middle East they are victims of terrorist attacks, killed in the line of duty, in the field - hardly the case in America.

"Reporters, particularly freelancers who lack access to the safety resources of a big news organization, are especially vulnerable", CPJ told TheDCNF, noting that reporters can "mitigate risk [by] work [ing] in teams".
