Cam Newton Benched: Panthers Shut Down QB for Remainder of Season

The news comes after coach Ron Rivera said starting quarterback Cam Newton will be benched during Sunday's game against the Falcons due to a nagging shoulder injury.

While the league source left open the possibility that Newton could play in the finale against New Orleans, it does not appear likely that will happen.

Newton has been dealing with soreness in his right shoulder since the Panthers' comeback victory against the Philadelphia Eagles on October 21, which saw him throw 22 passes in the fourth quarter.

Newton arrived at practice Wednesday without a helmet and wearing sweats.

"It's not something that hasn't got worse over the weeks or hasn't got better over the weeks".

After dropping their last six games, the Panthers sit at 6-8 through the first 14 games of the season, and they're all but mathematically eliminated from making the playoffs this season (ESPN's Football Power Index gives them a 1 percent chance to capture a berth). He wants to play. In 2017, he had surgery to fix a partially torn right rotator cuff from an injury in 2016 and his shoulder has had continued issues ever since.

Newton completed 16 of 29 pass attempts with no touchdowns and one interception for a season-low 52.5 passer rating against the Saints.

"It keeps guys on their toes now", Wright said.

Center Ryan Kalil feels shutting down Newton is the prudent approach for the organization. Heinicke has been inserted multiple times to throw Hail Mary passes for Newton when the Panthers needed the deep throw made. "I feel awful for him".

Despite the rough finish to his 2018 season, Newton finishes the year with a completion percentage of 67.2, 24 touchdowns to 13 interceptions, 7.2 yards per pass attempt, and four rushing touchdowns on an average of about 35 rushing yards per game.

The Panthers announced Thursday they have signed quarterback Kyle Allen off the practice squad.
