Indonesia Reroutes Flights as Anak Krakatau Volcano Spews Ash Into Air

The head of meteorological and geophysics agency, BMKG, Dwikorita Karnawati, said the agency anxious about the rough weather making the volcano's crater more fragile.

"We were planning on holding a Christmas celebration every year, but this year is different due to the tsunami", Sitorus said, Reuters reported.

Indonesia on Thursday raised the danger alert level for a volcano that sparked a killer tsunami at the weekend, after previously warning that fresh activity at the crater threatened to trigger another deadly wave.

Unlike other tsunamis that have hit disaster-prone Indonesia following large earthquakes, Saturday's big waves blasted ashore at night without warning. "But with the tsunami, we can only pray humbly and not celebrate much for this year's Christmas", he said. An enormous magnitude 9.1 quake rocked the area the morning after Christmas, creating huge waves that surged far inland and swallowed everything in their path.

On Saturday, tsunamis hit coastal towns on the islands of Sumatra and Java leaving at least 430 dead and hundreds more missing.

As you can imagine, more people are reading The Jerusalem Post than ever before.

"We're starting to access the most isolated places hit by the tsunami", said senior disaster agency official Dody Ruswandi.

Nugroho, the disaster agency spokesman, acknowledged on Twitter that the country's network of detection buoys had been out of order since 2012 because of vandalism and budget shortfalls.

"Seconds later I saw people running from the tsunami wave shouting 'Tsunami!" "The radius of 1.2 miles from the crater peak is risky and there should be no activity there". The tsunami decimated the area, ripping houses from their foundations and bulldozing concrete buildings.
