Undocumented Immigrant Suspected of Killing California Cop Has Been Arrested: Authorities

A man suspected of gunning down a California policeman was in the USA illegally and was captured while planning to flee to his native Mexico, a sheriff announced as he all but blamed the state's sanctuary law for the officer's death.

Sheriff Adam Christianson said police arrested Gustavo Perez Arriaga, 32, in Bakersfield for allegedly killing Newman police Cpl.

As IJR News reported, authorities said 33-year-old Corporal Ronil Singh, a Fiji native who had immigrated to the U.S.to become a police officer, was shot and killed early Wednesday when he was pulling someone over for suspicion of driving under the influence.

Christianson said the case highlighted the dangers of a California law passed in 2017 that placed limits on how closely law enforcement can cooperate with federal agents seeking to deport illegal immigrants arrested for crimes. Christianson said at the news conference.

Police also arrested two accomplices who allegedly assisted Arriaga after he fled the scene of the shooting - his brother, Adrian Virgen, 25, and a co-worker, Erik Razo Quiroz, 35.

Trump tweeted about the shooting on Thursday, days after the December 22 partial shutdown of the federal government. "I am suggesting that the outcome could have been different if law enforcement wasn't restricted, prohibited or had their hands tied because of political interference". Singh. Police said Virgen was arrested in Hanford, Calif. and Quiroz was arrested in Modesto, Calif. He said both men also were in the country illegally. Jerry Brown says the law permits sharing information on unsafe gang members with federal authorities.

The bill bars law enforcement agencies from detaining a person due to a hold request, responding to federal immigration enforcement's requests for notification or providing information about a person's release date unless that's already available publicly.

Three people also were arrested at the home near Bakersfield for helping Perez Arriaga, Youngblood said. Singh had a newborn son and joined the 12-officer Newman police force in 2011.

"He came to America with one objective, and that was to serve this country", Newman Police Chief Randy Richardson said, choking up. This is a man that worked hard for what he believed in. "He believed in this community", the chief said at a community vigil Friday night honoring the officer.

Singh, the department's first officer to die in the line of duty, drove more than two hours each way to attend the police academy in Yuba City, Richardson said. He had a thick accent but took speech classes to improve his communication, the chief said.
