Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB) says it has detained a US citizen in Moscow over suspected spying. The US is also investigating whether Russian Federation interfered in US elections in 2016.

The TASS report said Whelan could face between 10 to 20 years in prison if found guilty but disclosed no further details. A spokesperson told Reuters, "We have requested this access and expect Russian authorities to provide it".

United States intelligence services have accused Moscow of interfering in the 2016 presidential election and earlier this month convicted Russian Maria Butina of acting as an illegal foreign agent.

According to BBC, the U.S. Department of State confirmed that Moscow notified them of the alleged arrest, but did not confirm the arrest or the man's name.

Alexander Mikhailov, a retired FSB officer, said the arrest reflected the effectiveness of Russian counterintelligence.
