Top Huawei executive arrested in Poland for espionage

Following her arrest two Canadians were detained in China on grounds of national security, in what has largely been seen as retaliation for the case. Polish security agents also searched the offices of Huawei and Orange, Poland's leading communications provider, where the Pole had recently worked, seizing documents and electronic data.

Both men's homes had also been searched during the investigation.

The incident has also sparked a surge of patriotism in China with companies encouraging staff to buy Huawei smartphones - and several companies even offering employee subsidies to buy phones from the home-grown company. "Some European governments and telecom companies are following the United States lead in questioning whether using Huawei for vital infrastructure for mobile networks could leave them exposed to snooping by the Chinese government".

"Both men carried out espionage activities against Poland".

Polish television reports that Piotr D left Poland's internal security agency (the ABW) following allegations of corruption, but was never formally charged.

"ABW (Internal Security Agency) officials conducted actions, as a result of which, we handed over belongings of one of our employees", Orange Polska said in a statement. They reportedly proclaimed their innocence. If found guilty of spying, they face up to 10 years in prison. Under Polish law, their last names can not be published ahead of trial.

The company, which makes telecom equipment and consumer electronics, said in a statement that it is "aware of the situation, and we are looking into it".

US President Donald Trump's administration has been pushing European allies to block Huawei from telecom networks amid a wider dispute over trade with China.

Following the U.S., Australia and New Zealand have also banned Huawei from supplying 5G networking equipment out of fear of a national security breach.

Orange told the AP it did not know if the suspicions against its employee were related to his professional duties and that it was working with the country's security agency.

The person arrested is a former Huawei sales director in Poland and has worked with government customers. And, as The Verge points out, China's National Intelligence law states that companies in the country are required to "support, cooperate with, and collaborate in national intelligence work".

Bradley's departure from the company's comes in the wake of increased scrutiny levied against the Chinese telecommunications equipment manufacturer, particularly in regards to the company's connection with the government of the People's Republic of China and concerns about espionage.

The US government alleges that Meng helped the company dodge sanctions on Iran.

The U.S. reportedly said Meng deceived global banks to funnel transactions between Huawei and Iran.

Ambassador Lu Shaye said on Wednesday that Canada's demand for the release of the two detained Canadians reflects "double standards" born of "western egotism and white supremacy".
