Before Rep. Gabbard made her announcement on social media, CNN reported that Gabbard meant to run for the office during an interview slated to air at 7 p.m. Saturday on the network's "The Van Jones Show".

Gabbard will become the first Hindu to run for the White House when she announces formally next week.

"'I have chose to run and will be making a formal announcement within the next week", she said on the show, which airs Saturday.

Gabbard also faced intense criticism, including from members of her own party, for meeting Syrian President Bashar al-Assad during a trip to Syria in 2017. She says it's important to meet with adversaries if "you are serious about pursuing peace".
