Government makes last-ditch appeal for Brexit vote backing

"With the time it has bought, the government can pursue a new plan, but it will still be working towards a deadline to resolve the same deep political divisions over what Brexit should look like", said Haralambous.

MPs, she said, should respect the results of the 2016 referendum in which 52 per cent of voters backed leaving the EU. "My message to Parliament this weekend is simple: it is time to forget the games and do what is right for our country".

"MPs need to remember that Britain, its people and its traditions are the mother of Parliaments".

Foreign secretary Jeremy Hunt has also urged MPs to pass the withdrawal agreement, saying "Brexit paralysis" could damage the country's long-term future.

Chris Grayling's claim that blocking Brexit could lead to a rise in far-right extremism is unsafe scaremongering and a desperate attempt to shore up the prime minister's Brexit deal, campaigners and MPs have said.

"Clearly if Theresa May's Brexit deal is voted down and clearly if a General Election takes place and a Labour government comes in - an election would take place in February/March time - clearly there is only a few weeks then between that and the leave date".

He also reiterated his party would be pushing for a General Election but said if it couldn't force one he would like to see a deal struck rather than another referendum.

The MPs will have been debating it for five days.

May postponed a vote on the deal in mid-December when a resounding defeat was clear.

The focus will be the vote in the House of Commons on Tuesday evening on the Prime Minister's Brexit deal - almost two months after the withdrawal agreement was struck with the European Union.

"There are some in Westminster who would wish to delay or even stop Brexit and who will use every device available to them to do so", Mrs May will say in a speech to factory workers in the leave-supporting city of Stoke-on-Trent in central England, according to advance extracts.

Although May and her government have continually said they wouldn't allow a second Brexit referendum, EIU's Haralambous says that "the task of getting a version of May's deal approved will become more hard if the margin of defeat in the upcoming meaningful vote is particularly large and/or the European Union refuses to provide concessions that make the terms of the deal more palatable to UK MPs".

The BBC estimates that May's deal is likely to be supported by about 240 MPs, far short of the number needed for passage.

The heads of state and government said at a recent summit that the withdrawal agreement, and the contentious backstop that a large number of Tory MPs fear will trap the United Kingdom in a permanent customs union, could be neither altered nor reinterpreted.

As May made a last-ditch appeal to members of Parliament, the Guardian reported the European Union is expecting a request from London to extend the March 29 deadline for leaving the bloc.

The Observer newspaper reported Sunday that its lawmakers have been told it could be tabled "within hours" of that on Tuesday, with the confidence vote to be held the following day.

Elsewhere, Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn warned the Prime Minister that he would trigger a vote of no confidence in her Government "soon", as he hinted that Article 50 may have to be extended if his party came into power.
