Google May Also Be Violating Apple's Policies Just Like Facebook

The program paid users ages 13 to 35 up to $20 a month for access to their devices to track their activity.

Facebook is under more scrutiny after a report that it paid teens for access to data on their phones. TechCrunch reported that Google is running a data collector similar to Facebook's app on Apple's system. While Facebook said late last night that it would shut down the iOS app, Apple is apparently not satisfied and revoked Facebook's developer licenses on Wednesday.

Apple has responded to the news that Facebook used their special developer program, created to let companies share apps internally, to target a privacy-invasive VPN towards teenagers.

According to TechCrunch, Facebook's research app may have been able to access information like private messages, web searches and location data.

Facebook confirmed the research program's existence to TechCrunch.

Its tit-for-tat battle with Apple isn't the only headache Facebook is now suffering, as USA lawmaker.

That's had knock-on effects for Facebook, which also used the program legitimately to test apps with employees. The news comes after Apple already banned Facebook's data-harvesting Onavo VPN app from its app store in June of past year.

After Apple's ongoing quarrel with Facebook came to a head, thousands of employees at the world's largest social media network were locked out of numerous apps they have become dependent on to meet basic needs.

As mentioned before, Facebook employees' day-to-day work has been made more hard by the certificate revocation. The pair of apps were still violating Apple's policy when it comes to those enterprise certificates.

It's likely that this is just a temporary setback and it's very unlikely that Apple will boot Facebook's apps from its App Store. Internal documents published by MP Damian Collins as part of a probe of a company named Six4Three found that Facebook used data collected through Onavo to determine "which companies to acquire, and which to treat as a threat".

"The Screenwise Meter iOS app should not have operated under Apple's developer enterprise program - this was a mistake, and we apologize", Google said in a statement to TechCrunch.

Facebook employees told Business Insider that their colleagues are "pissed" and "angry", and have cast blame on Apple or on their own colleagues.

But it also raises serious questions about how Facebook continues to approach and value sensitive user data, as the company attempts to recover from successive privacy scandals throughout 2018 and other, broader crises. According to a report from The Verge, Apple has shut down Google's internal iOS apps for doing the exact same thing Facebook was doing-distributing enterprise apps outside of the company.

It turns out that Google, like Facebook, abused its Apple Enterprise Developer Certificate to distribute a data collection app to iOS users, in direct contravention of Apple's rules for the distribution program. The iPhone maker's leadership has increasingly made the championing of privacy a hallmark of its brand identity, and with that in mind Apple has taken swift and dramatic action over the past 24 hours in response to the actions of two of the biggest technology companies who also depend on Apple's platform.
