Apple punishes Google for data collection app

Google said that Apple had also revoked its enterprise certificate, blocking the tech giant's employees from testing new app features on iPhones. "To be clear, this didn't have an impact on our consumer-facing services".

After news broke that Apple had revoked Facebook's enterprise certificate over its non-compliant Facebook Research app, Google shut down its similar research app, Screenwise Meter.

The block came because Google sidestepped the App Store and took advantage of Apple's developer enterprise program, which is created to let companies internally distribute apps, TechCrunch reported Wednesday.

Facebook spokesman Andy Stone did not immediately respond to other questions.

Apple finally stood up to Facebook and Google on matters of privacy, and it made a powerful point about the influence it wields in mobile. This resulted in Google's pre-release beta apps as well as employee-only apps, for example those for using Google's shuttle bus or coffee shops, stopping working.

Suspending the licenses stopped app development inside both companies and disrupted basic corporate functions until Apple once again granted access Thursday night. Just like Facebook, the app relied on Apple's enterprise program that allows distribution of internal apps within the company.

Apple has restored Google's internal applications in the App Store. It was using its enterprise access to distribute a market research app.

Apple has restored the functionality of Google apps on its internal iOS.

Google is apparently being punished for an app it distributed called Screenwise Meter. This app is completely voluntary and always has been. "We've been upfront with users about the way we use their data in the app, we have no access to encrypted data in apps and on devices, and users can opt out of the program at any time".

So while the rules apply equally to all companies, Apple didnt hesitate to react to the unintended use of the enterprise certificate with Google.

It's unclear what is causing this issue or how widespread it is, but a quick Twitter search for people tweeting at Apple's support account seems to indicate that only iOS 11 users are affected. It is likely that this practice is widespread and involve much more than Google and Facebook. Tech blog TechCrunch reported this week that the social media platform Facebook paid about Dollars 20 a month to teens and other users who agreed to download the Facebook Research app. And, unlike Facebook - which stripped its name off Research VPN following the similarly snoopy Onavo VPN getting pushed out of the App Store - Google's clear about its involvement. The company announced Thursday that that had happened. It's now punishing Google, too.

This time, however, it sounds like Apple didn't need its bouncers to show Google to the door.

Facebook app for iOS users has been updated to version 206.0, and while it brings under the hood improvements for other iPhone users, it also introduces native higher resolution support.
