Search for missing Cardiff City's Sala resumes in English Channel

Search and rescue operations for Argentina soccer star Emiliano Sala who was aboard a private plane that disappeared late Monday near the Channel Islands were suspended Tuesday evening, officials said.

Guernsey Police revealed that the search is focused on a scenario whereby those on board made it to a life raft after landing on water, although other theoretical outcomes are also being considered. The aircraft was en route to Wales from Nantes - where Sala had been a player since 2015 - when it vanished over the English Channel Islands.

"The aircraft on passing Guernsey requested descent", police said in a statement, noting that the plane was flying at an altitude of 2,300 feet when it lost contact. Authorities launched a search for the plane Monday night but had to call it off hours later due to adverse weather conditions.

They then posted an update to let people know that the search had stopped, and that the plan was to resume the search at sunrise on Wednesday morning.

On Sunday, Cardiff City had announced they had signed the striker for a club record fee from Nantes.

Sala had been flying to Cardiff after signing for the Premier League team in a £15 million deal.

Search and rescue teams scoured a vast area off the Channel Islands throughout Tuesday before resuming the effort early on Wednesday. "I am getting scared!"

Guernsey Police said there were three planes and one helicopter in the air as they searched for traces of the Piper Malibu plane. "At this time of year the conditions out there are pretty horrendous if you are actually in the water". Sala completed a £15million move to Cardiff City on Saturday before returning to France to bid farewell to his old squad at Ligue 1 side Nantes, posting a poignant photo (right) alongside the words, "The last goodbye". "It is concerning because if they're in the water their chances of surviving are diminishing all the time". "We don't know very much at this point but I'm still hopeful that it's not over and that he is somewhere to be found".
