Mourinho gets one-year prison sentence

Other current and former Real Madrid players, such as Xabi Alonso, Marcelo, Luka Modric, Pepe, Fabio Coentrao, Iker Casillas, Angel Di Maria and Ricardo Carvalho have all had legal problems related to tax in recent years.

Spanish tax authorities claimed Mourinho owed £3m - he had already settled a previous claim relating to his Spanish taxes after a 2014 inquiry, which resulted in a penalty of £1.1m.

In addition to the suspended sentence, he will pay a reported €2m in fines.

Mourinho is one of the most successful coaches in modern European soccer, winning league titles with Chelsea, Inter Milan, Real Madrid and Porto.

Prosecutors believe by ceding his image rights to a series of companies based in tax havens, Mourinho committed fraud by not declaring the income those companies made from the rights.

While appearing on beIN Sport, the 56-year-old suggested March would be the time he steps up a return to being a No 1 but for now he appears content enjoying some time away from the spotlight.

Spanish prosecutors said that Mr Mourinho, a Portuguese national, had set up multiple business entities in the British Virgin Islands and elsewhere to manage his image rights.

Image rights cover the use of a person's likeness, voice, signature and mannerisms - and can be very lucrative for footballers and managers.

Cristiano Ronaldo, now of Juventus, was also found guilty of tax fraud when at Real Madrid.

Under Spanish law, jail terms under two years can be served under probation.
