Will Dems lose Virginia governorship? State's top three officials embroiled in scandal

The simultaneous controversies embroiling the top three-elected politicians in the executive branch of Virginia's government raised the unlikely prospect of Democrats losing the governorship to a Republican. Fairfax, however, had his own moment of reckoning this week, when a California professor accused him of sexually assaulting her in a hotel room at the 2004 Democratic National Convention.

Trump accused Democrats Thursday of political bias, tweeting that "If the three failing pols were Republicans, far stronger action would be taken".

Fairfax has forcefully denied the allegations leveled by Tyson and responded to her lengthy statement on Wednesday by saying he had "never done anything like what she suggests".

But then rumours began circulating of another controversial photo, and this time it was Herring who was said to been in "blackface".

"At no time did she express to me any discomfort or concern about our interactions, neither during that encounter, nor during the months following it, when she stayed in touch with me, nor the past 15 years", he said in a statement. Tyson's depiction of events, along with Lt. Governor Fairfax's alleged statement of "f-- that b--", has garnered a lot of media and public attention.

In a statement earlier, Tyson said after the incident she was "unsure of what to do, I felt it was crucial to tell close friends of mine in Virginia" about the assault, but it is not clear who those friends were.

Racial discrimination is more explicit in Virginia, which grapples with a legacy of slavery and white supremacy, but it also exists - in a more subtle form - in Oregon, Brown said. President Trump referred to Northam's interview during his State of the Union speech, where he bashed the embattled governor for stating "he would execute a baby after birth".

Prominent Democrats came down hard on Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam after he apologized for a racist photo.

"I think there should be an investigation to determine what happened", Harris told reporters on Capitol Hill.

Herring, Bloomberg noted, had already planned to run for governor in 2021 - Virginia governors are limited to one term - and was among the many Democrats calling for Northam to step down.

The accusation against Justin Fairfax resurfaced over the weekend after Democratic Gov. Ralph Northam faced calls for resignation following the discovery of a racist photo on his medical school yearbook page.

After initially saying he was one of the two depicted in the photo, Northam changed his story and said neither was him.

The entire Democrat leadership of the U.S. state of Virginia is crumbling under allegations of racism and sexual assault.

Rep. Bobby Scott has known about the sex assault allegation against Virginia's lieutenant governor for a year - and used to date the accuser, according to new reports.

In the days since, Northam's administration has tried to inch its way back to normalcy while some of his top staff and advisers wonder if such a thing will ever be possible.

On Wednesday, though, Herring confessed that he and two friends dressed up to look like rappers, admitting: "It sounds ridiculous even now writing it".

"I'm not privy to any plans, but I suspect he will step up and lead", said Republican Sen.

The calls from Democrats for Northam to resign were nearly universal, from the Virginia Democratic Party to former Democratic governors of the state, to the commonwealth's two current USA senators, to organizations that long supported him, like the Planned Parenthood Federation of America.
