Canadian serial killer Bruce McArthur sentenced to life in prison

Toronto's police chief says the sentence handed down on February 8 to serial killer Bruce McArthur means the man will never see daylight again.

The sentence delivered by Justice John McMahon means McArthur will not be eligible to apply for parole until he is 91 years old.

He pleaded guilty to killing eight men between 2010 and 2017.

That waiting period would have left McArthur ineligible for parole until the age of 116, beyond his expected natural lifespan. The only thing judges deliberated on was whether to grant him parole eligibility concurrent or consecutive to his sentence.

Serial killer Bruce McArthur, who murdered eight men with ties to Toronto's gay village, was sentenced to life in prison Friday.

The victims include Selim Esen, Skandaraj Navaratnam, Andrew Kinsman, Majeed Kayhan, Soroush Mahmudi, Dean Lisowick, Kirushna Kumar Kanagaratnama, and Abdulbasir Faizi. Families and friends of the respective men were not given the closure that they deserved in a timely manner.

Police were able to track McArthur down after they discovered surveillance footage of his last victim - Kinsman - entering a van linked to McArthur.

McArthur specifically targeted gay men in Toronto using gay dating apps.

"We will continue to do what we can to support the community and look for opportunities to improve our relationship", she said in an email.

He killed and dismembered the men between 2010 and 2017, and allegedly hid seven of the corpses in planters and the eighth in a ravine.

In committing the eight murders, the judge said, McArthur victimized the dead men's families twice over: first when their loved one vanished and again when they finally learned the "horrific truth". "The ability to decapitate and dismember his victims and do it repeatedly is pure evil".

Toronto police Chief Mark Saunders addressed the sentence during a conference at police headquarters.

Two police investigations into the missing men returned no leads, even though McArthur's name came up during one investigation, and he was as a witness (not a suspect) during the later one.

Karen Fraser, the owner of the home, who had casually met two of the victims, has said she is "haunted" by the case.

"Although Mr. McArthur has taken responsibility by pleading guilty, there has been no evidence I can see of remorse", said Justice John McMahon.

"Some of his victims were recent immigrants from other countries. and they were also part of an LGBT community that is not always a community that elicits prompt and thorough responses from police when somebody goes missing", he said. He was found bound to a bed with a bag over his head but otherwise unharmed. "It is saddening and unacceptable that it took the disappearance of Andrew Kinsman to reopen public interest in the cases of the missing South Asian and Middle Eastern men".

"Hopefully, one thing that comes out of this is better lines of communication between the police and marginalised communities across the city", he added.

But if McArthur believed they would go unmissed, he miscalculated.

Crown attorney Michael Cantlon, whose prosecutorial team compared McArthur to Robert Pickton earlier this week, said he wouldn't comment on the sentence, though he noted that the judge has his "utmost respect".
