Seoul: US, NKorea officials to meet in Asia ahead of summit

Trump made the announcement in a tweeted message on Friday, describing a meeting his representatives had in North Korea with their counterparts as "very productive".

Mr Trump said his representatives had a "productive meeting" and that he was looking forward to advancing peace.

On Thursday, Trump's special envoy for North Korea, Stephen Biegun, held a second day of talks with officials in Pyongyang, North Korea's capital, to hammer out summit logistics and an agenda.

Vietnam's Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Le Thi Thu Hang said late last month that Vietnam was confident of its readiness to host the second Kim-Trump meeting.

The announcement of the location for second summit comes just days after a confidential United Nations report found that the North Korean nuclear and missile program remains intact.

Trump is now confirming that the talks will be on February 27 and 28 in Hanoi, and said he expects North Korea to "become a great Economic Powerhouse" because of how great and capable Kim is.

He said much work remained to be done in the push for peace with North Korea, but cited the halt in its nuclear testing and no new missile launches in 15 months as proof of progress. Mr. Biegun is expected to come to South Korea to brief officials as early as Friday.

A meeting with the US President has been a top foreign policy goal of Pyongyang since Kim Jong Il invited Bill Clinton. North Korea's state media have not commented on the plans.

The post-war trajectory of relations between America and Vietnam was, the official added, a hopeful model for potential warmer relations between the United States and North Korea.

Attention will focus on whether the U.S. team have offered to lift some economic sanctions in return for Pyongyang taking concrete steps toward denuclearization.

From Washington's point of view, Vietnam is a globally strategic location for the USA, which is in a trade dispute with China, one of North Korea's closest allies.

While in the U.S. view, NKorea has yet to take concrete steps to give up its nuclear weapons, Pyongyang complains that Washington has done little to reciprocate for its freezing of nuclear and missile testing and dismantling of some facilities. Yoshihide Suga, Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary, also mentioned the kidnapping of Japanese citizens by North Korea in the 1970s and 1980s, saying that it is one of the most critical issues related to Pyongyang.

Mr. DeTrani, a former Central Intelligence Agency official who served as the State Department's special envoy for North Korea talks prior to their collapse almost a decade ago, offered a similar take, suggesting a lack of specific movement on denuclearization during the months since Mr. Trump and Mr. Kim met last June in Singapore has been frustrating.

South Korea's national security adviser Chung Eui-yong, who met Biegun, reported that U.S.
