Self-harm clips hidden in kids' cartoons

When asked her reaction to the man making the gesture on the video, parent Lorraine Romero said, "I just see the destruction of kids, and people that are sick".

She returned to the blog again in February with another instance instructing parents to continue to watch their children on the web. When Hess went to YouTube Kids and started exploring the site, what she saw there shocked her.

"It makes me angry and sad and frustrated", Hess told CNN.

In the parody video, a second character appears in time to stop the attempted suicide, with the narrator stating: "Why couldn't he just let me hang myself?"

"I think our kids are facing a whole new world with social media and internet access".

"There are many more videos out there with inappropriate content but they can be hard to spot prior to being viewed". Among those were scenes depicting school shootings, a cartoon about human trafficking, and others glorifying child suicide. Now, the YouTube Kids app shows kids how to commit suicide (via Washington Post).

Parents NEED to be aware of this! "One suggested video was an hours-long lecture by Icke in which he claims that aliens built the pyramids, that the planet is run by reptile-human hybrids, that Freemasons engage in human sacrifice, that the assassination of President Kennedy was planned by the U.S. government, and that humans would evolve in 2012".

The horrific "instructions" had been hidden at four minutes and 45 seconds into a seven-minute video, she said.

"The YouTube Kids team is made up of parents who care deeply about this, so it's extremely important for us to get this right, and we act quickly when videos are brought to our attention", a YouTube spokeswoman told CNET at the time.

"Unlike YouTube itself, YouTube Kids is supposed to be specifically FOR kids".

Kaslow, who teaches at Emory University's school of medicine, said that some children may ignore the grim video content but that others, particularly those who are more vulnerable, may be drawn to it. We cannot continue to risk this. She recorded it, wrote about it and reported the content to the video-sharing platform, she said.

Ms Andrea Faville, a spokesman for YouTube, said in a written statement that the company works to ensure that it is "not used to encourage unsafe behaviour and we have strict policies that prohibit videos which promote self-harm".

The service claims that it uses a mix of filters, human reviewers, and feedback for its content. In April a year ago, YouTube announced three new parental control features to give parents the ability to curate what their child is seeing on the app.
