Journalist Cody Weddle Has Been Released From Custody By Venezuelan Forces

National Assembly leader Juan Guaido also took to Twitter to demand the government free Weddle, "who was kidnapped by a regime that usurps functions and tries, without success, to hide the truth of what is happening in our country".

Guaido declared himself "interim president" in January.

In the latest crackdown on a challenge to his rule by opposition leader Juan Guaido, Maduro also expelled the German ambassador, accusing him of repeated meddling in the country's affairs.

"[I heard from him at] maybe about 6 or 7 yesterday evening and yesterday morning about 10", she said.

The U.S. State Department said it's aware of a missing journalist and warned President Nicolas Maduro's government that the world is watching.

German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas called the move "an incomprehensible decision, which escalates the situation instead of easing tensions".

Weddle had been based in Caracas for four years, according to Espacio Publico, a free speech NGO.

Guaido also said Maduro had effectively been ignoring him since his return to Venezuela in hopes that his political momentum will fade.

Venezuela broke off diplomatic ties with neighbouring Colombia after Maduro's security forces blocked a February 23 attempt by Guaido and allies to bring humanitarian aid into Venezuela from Colombia and Brazil.

Ramos, one of the most influential Spanish-speaking journalists, said Maduro cut short the interview after 17 minutes when he was shown video on an iPad shot a day earlier of young Venezuelans eating food scraps out of the back of a garbage truck.

A Venezuelan national workers union for journalists this morning tweeted saying that Cody Weddle had been taken into custody after raids on his home in Caracas by the national military counter-intelligence group. Weddle also worked as an intern at WSLS 10 in 2011 and now works as a reporter for one of our sister stations, WPLG, in South Florida.

Neither Venezuela's information ministry nor the U.S. State Department immediately responded to requests for comment.

The U.S.is pursuing new diplomatic and economic initiatives to support Guaido's bid for a transitional government in Venezuela, National Security Adviser John Bolton said Wednesday.

The Trump administration has imposed oil sanctions in Venezuela as well as sanctions on high-ranking members of the Venezuelan security forces and other senior officials.

WPLG reported on its website that its management's attempts to reach Weddle "have proven unsuccessful" and that his last contact with station employees was on Tuesday afternoon.

Washington has continued to tighten the screws on its campaign of sanctions to force Maduro from power, revoking the visas of 77 people linked to the regime, including officials and their families.
