Manafort sentenced to 47 months in prison

The judge in Paul Manafort's sentencing hearing said Thursday that President Donald Trump's former campaign chairman is not being sentenced to prison for anything related to special counsel Robert Mueller's Russian Federation investigation.

- Ari Melber (@AriMelber) March 8, 2019I would expect on Manafort, after this 47 month sentence in VA, that the special counsel will seek, and Judge Amy Berman Jackson will impose, a few years' consecutive time in the DC case. After pro-Kremlin Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych's ouster, prosecutors said, Manafort lied to banks to secure loans and maintain an opulent lifestyle with luxurious homes, designer suits and even a $15,000 ostrich-skin jacket.

Manafort still faces sentencing in the District of Columbia, where he pleaded guilty in a separate case connected to illegal lobbying. But US District Judge T.S. Elliss said the sentencing guidelines were excessive and would create "an unwarranted disparity" with other cases.

Prosecutors disputed that, and in court filings said Manafort's business dealings were under investigation even before Mueller was appointed as special counsel. While Ellis didn't sentence Manafort with the maximum jail time, Ellis revealed that he was disappointed that Manafort hadn't shown any remorse for his crimes. Trump has denied collusion and obstruction and Russian Federation has denied election interference. Still, prosecutors sprinkled tantalizing clues in court filings about Manafort's interactions with an associate, Konstantin Kilimnik, linked by Mueller to a Russian intelligence service.

Months of investigations, court appearances, and guilty pleas has led to the day Paul Manafort will be sentenced in a Virginia court for a number of crimes stemming from his work as a lobbyist and consultant.

Special Counsel Robert Mueller released a sentencing memo in the case against Manafort in Washington, D.C., describing "bold" criminal actions by Manafort in a lengthy new memo in February.

The verdict marked a dramatic fall for Manafort, a savvy political operative who advised US presidents as well as foreign leaders.

Prosecutors add that Manafort was not forthcoming with earlier investigators.

Prosecutors have not suggested a specific sentence.

Last fall, Manafort reached a plea agreement with Mueller's team just before he was to go to trial in Washington on a series of other charges, including failing to register as a foreign agent.

Manafort will be sentenced by a judge who faced criticism by some in the legal community for making comments during the trial that were widely interpreted as biased against the prosecution. While Ellis admitted that before these crimes, Manafort had been "a good friend" and a "generous person, " he stated that this "can't erase" his crimes.

"It isn't a crime to have a lot of money and be profligate in your spending", Ellis told prosecutors. The former Trump presidential campaign chairman was acquitted on 10 additional charges of foreign banking and bank fraud when the jury could not come to a consensus.

CNN was caught accidentally using a photo of a judge who's been dead for more than a decade to illustrate a Thursday afternoon report about the sentencing of Paul Manafort. Ellis had granted permission.
