Trump Says Good Relations Remain with Kim Jong

The denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula is still possible in President Donald Trump's first term, a top U.S. diplomat said, a week after the collapse of the talks with North Korea in Hanoi.

"The public at home and overseas that had hoped for success and good results from the second DPRK-U.S. summit in Hanoi are feeling regretful, blaming the U.S. for the summit that ended without an agreement", Korea Central News Agency reported, citing a commentary in the Rodong Sinmun newspaper.

Mr Kim had agreed to shutter the Sohae Satellite Launching Station at a summit with the South's President Moon Jae-in in Pyongyang as part of confidence-building measures.

"Well, time will tell, but I have a feeling that our relationship with North Korea - Kim Jong Un and myself-Chairman Kim-think it's a very good one", Trump said on the South Lawn on March 8.

Trump abruptly ended the summit with Kim last week in Hanoi, Vietnam after refusing to comply with the North's demands of lifting all sanctions.

Still, the official struck a cautiously optimistic tone after the collapse of nuclear talks at Trump's summit in Hanoi last month with Kim, saying that negotiators had moved closer in their understanding of what "denuclearization" means.

The official said complete denuclearisation was the condition for North Korea's integration into the global economy, a transformed relationship with the United States and a permanent peace regime on the Korean peninsula. In fact, the North Koreans practically clung on to Trump's trouser legs as he was packing his bags and offered to expand the scope of facilities they could scrap at Yongbyon.

The images, which were released to the US's National Public Radio, also showed activity at North Korea's Sohae site which has been the scene of satellite launches in recent years. From now on, North Korea's denuclearization must be addressed exclusively based on these facts. The statement was much milder than its past warlike statements issued in response to the just-ended South Korea-US drills that North Korea viewed as an invasion rehearsal.

North Korea's state media on Thursday called the new, smaller US-South Korea exercise "a wanton violation" of previous agreements to ease tensions and remove hostility among them.

"We have to assume they are going to have to cheat, assume they keep their nuclear weapons, no matter what", King continued, adding it is important for the United States to keep its sanctions on and keep some of its military activity active in South Korea. And, in Hanoi, North Korea said, look, we don't trust the USA enough to make this kind of grand bargain.

Suh Hoon, the director of South Korea's National Intelligence Service, told his nation's lawmakers in Seoul that North Korea was restoring facilities at a rocket launch site it had dismantled previous year in a goodwill measure. "In exchange for that, what the North Koreans will be able to enjoy is integration into the global economy, a transformed relationship with the U.S., a permanent peace regime on the Korean Peninsula, and a closure to a 70-year relationship characterised by hostility and warfare between our two countries", the official said.

"What they don't want is to send their guy here and POTUS says 'nope I'm out of here, see you on the 9th hole, '" the authority said. "We also don't know how far the train has gotten".

North Korea has frozen nuclear and missile testing since 2017, and Trump has pointed to this as a positive outcome from almost a year of high-level engagement with North Korea.
