FAA issues emergency order to ground Boeing 737 Max 8, 9 planes

On Wednesday, the U.S. added itself to the list of countries and airlines temporarily grounding Boeing 737 MAX planes as investigations continue after a recent pair of Max 8 crashes killed all passengers and crew aboard.

According to flight tracking website, FlightRadar24, all Boeing 737 MAX jets have now been grounded.

The UK, the European Union, China, Australia and India are among the countries that have suspended the Boeing 737 Max from their airspace.

Boeing, which maintained that its planes were safe to fly, said in a statement that it supported the FAA move.

FAA Administrator Dan Elwell preiously said in a statement Tuesday the agency's review of the 737 Max model "shows no systemic performance issues and provides no basis to order grounding the aircraft".

The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (or FAA) said in a statement that it "made the decision as a result of the data gathering process and new evidence collected at the site and analyzed today".

Norwegian Air, one of the biggest 737 MAX customers, with 110 on order, said Wednesday it expects Boeing to compensate it for the financial impact of the suspension, The Wall Street Journal reported.

However, it said after consultation with the FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board it had made a decision to ground the flights "out of an abundance of caution and in order to reassure the flying public of the aircraft's safety".

"Many have asked questions about how this affects our financial situation", he said in the video. The MAX 8, though, remains a small part of Southwest's fleet, but the company relies exclusively on the 737 family, which has been flying for years without incident.

Lion Air now operates 10 Max 8 jets, part of a then-record $22 billion order from Boeing made in 2011.

Ethiopian Airlines has said Thursday that the black box flight recorders from the Boeing 737 Max 8 that crashed with 157 people on board have been flown to Paris, France for analysis.

Before Sunday's disaster, more than 370 jets of the model were in operation.

"Based on the information now available, we do not have any basis to issue new guidance to operators", Boeing said in a statement.

The plane that crashed in Ethiopia is similar to the Boeing Max 8 model that went down off the coast of Indonesia last October.

Hong Kong flag carrier Cathay Pacific does not have any 737 MAX aircraft in its fleet. John Samuelsen, global president of the Transport Workers Union of America, which represents aviation workers and flight attendants, said the grounding was right "both for air travelers and aviation workers".

While Gebremariam of Ethiopian Airlines said the cause of the crash was not yet clear, he cast doubt on the airworthiness of the 737 Max.

Both the Ethiopian Airlines crash and a Lion Air crash in Indonesia occurred last October just minutes after takeoff.

Some pilots complained about the plane suddenly nosing down.

Six airlines, including Southwest and American Airlines, operate Boeing 737 Max aircraft out of Orlando International Airport. They were about 30 minutes away from boarding when they learned their flight was canceled.

Jeff Hoppenstein and Eric Speer who fly frequently for their company, Club Systems, say their travel plans from Greenville to Texas aren't impacted by the grounding Wednesday but they worry what the long term effects could be.
