New Zealand terror attack suspect appears in court on murder charges

Police Commissioner Mike Bush declined to comment on whether it was an act of terrorism but said the situation was unprecedented in New Zealand.

About 41 people were killed at the Masjid Al Noor mosque in central Christchurch at about 1:45 pm [local time], and the rest were killed in a second shooting at the Linwood Masjid Mosque.

Many of you will have seen that Air New Zealand has cancelled all turboprop flights out of Christchurch tonight and will review the situation in the morning. One man in his late 20s has been charged with murders.

Two other people remain in custody.

The survivors included 17 members of Bangladesh's cricket team, whose game against New Zealand on Saturday has been postponed, and a Palestinian man who fled for his life after seeing someone being shot in the head.

Unlike in the United States, where calls for greater gun control after mass shootings are often met by deaf ears when it comes to federal regulation, three mass shootings - only one of which happened in New Zealand - prompted legislative changes. Two improvised explosive devises were found in a suspect's vehicle.

The Los Angeles Police Department posted to Twitter that while it had no indication that any related attacks would be carried out in the city, it would increase patrolling around L.A. mosques "out of an abundance of caution".

Christchurch was the home of these victims.

"The right wing in this country needs to be held accountable for it... because the truth of the matter is that if this was somebody Muslim that engaged in this kind of tragedy, we would've had all kinds of finger pointing, and things written by some of the worst people on the planet that we were supposed to take into consideration", Jenkins told Radio Sputnik's Loud & Clear on Friday.
