Police questioning suspect in Gambino crime boss death

"He has a conversation with an individual in front of that residence and that individual at some point in time, it's only about a minute into it, pulls out a firearm and shots are fired", said NYPD Chief of Detectives Dermot Shea.

"We are very confident that he will be charged with the murder of Mr Cali", upon the suspect's handing over to NY, the official said.

The truck involved in the encounter has since been recovered, though the murder weapon has not, according to the police official.

The purported head of the Gambino crime family, also known as "Franky Boy", was shot repeatedly outside his home in the NY borough of Staten Island late Wednesday.

"We thought those days were over", the city's Mayor Bill de Blasio told journalists after the shooting.

"On the victim's auto that was present at the murder scene that night, we believe we have fingerprints recovered from that vehicle, as well as other places", Shea said. Without making further presumptions over the case, it might be worth reporting the details which have come to light since Frank Cali's death.

A Staten Island man has been arrested for the killing of Francisco Cali.

Mob Boss Gunned Down Outside Staten Island Home

A white male, 24, who is a Staten Island resident and was apprehended in New Jersey on Saturday morning, is being questioned in the Garden State about the murder, law enforcement sources told the Advance.

Cali, 53, was shot outside his home in the Todt Hill section of Staten Island on Wednesday night, authorities said.

Cali was an associate in the Gambino family, according to court documents, when he was indicted in 2008 with more than two dozen other Gambino members for a range of alleged crimes.

Multiple press accounts since 2015 said Cali had ascended to the top spot in the gang, although he never faced a criminal charge saying so. He was sentenced to 16 months in federal prison and was released in 2009.

It was the first execution of a mob boss in New York City in more than 30 years.

Angel Gotti was referring to early speculation that her uncle Gene Gotti, just released from prison previous year, was somehow behind the hit, in some kind of power struggle.
